Source Confirms Stacey Dales Quit ESPN Because She Wouldn't Fly Coach
Yep, an ESPN source has confirmed that sideline lovely Stacey Dales quit ESPN over a tiff about airline seating. It's a story as old as journalism itself.

Dales, a two-time All-American the University of Oklahoma who also played in the WNBA, talked about the situation in an article today in the Oklahoman. While not coming out and admitting that she left ESPN after six years because the network was making her fly coach — while other reporters flew first class — she did hint in that direction.

In negotiating a new three-year contract in December, Dales said she reached an impasse with the network over a travel provision that she did not specify. However, an ESPN source confirmed an Internet report that Dales was unhappy with flying coach while many of her colleagues were flying first class.

Yes Mel, the story was "an Internet report" ... it just sprung from the ground like crude oil. You're drinking our milkshake, Mel.

Anyway, here's what Stacey had to say about her departure from the WWL (from a newspaper report):

"At some point, you have to take a stand at whatever you are doing in life," Dales said. "That's not sounding like a feminist. That's not sounding like a spoiled, rotten kid. That's making a business decision that affects the quality of your life. That was an important thing for me."

Since joining ESPN in 2002, Dales had developed into one of the network's top sideline reporters and provided strong analysis in the college basketball studio. "ESPN was a great launching pad for something new," she said. "I had a great experience with them."

1. "Sideline lovely"??? I'm guessing none of the male employees get called a "sideline hunk."

3. What do you expect from a sport where the only women who get noticed wear cheerleader outfits?
Men get to look like this, even if they lack any semblance of actual talent for the job:

Female journalists have to be gorgeous, and they still get relegated mostly to talking about the players wives and mothers, and maybe touching tales about the orphans one of the players bought tickets for. Pisses me off to watch Pam Oliver, one of the best journalists covering the NFL, treated as a minor addendum to the booth when half the time she's got more to say about the game than they do. One of my favorite moments was watching her cut off the booth commentators. She had the camera and was asking some player a very good question, and he answered, and she followed up with "They're telling me to wrap it up, but I want to follow up my question." So she asked a smart follow-up, got a good answer, and when it was over said "Alright guys, NOW you can cut away to the booth." You could see the disdain on her face. There was a stunned moment of silence from the booth, then one of them meekly said "Thank you, Pam," and they went back to their yammering. I think I applauded.

Tony Siragusa, Sideline Lovely. Can't wait for the nudes.

5. They need to have "sideline hunks" at every last NCAA women's and WNBA game they do.
I'm thinking Speedos.

2. Sounds more like a dispute over rank.
If the others were flying first class and she wasn't, that was a clear indication that ESPN did not consider her a top rank reporter, and she felt her position there wasn't as strong as she wanted.

When the other VPs get the Cadillacs and the keys to the washroom, and you get a ten year old Malibu and a packet of handi-wipes, you aren't a strong priority to them. Your two choices are settling for their opinion of you, and leaving to find better work. Having no idea who Stacey Dales is, I can't say whether she made the right choice.

I can say that a major panel in the glass ceiling is the tendency to treat women who quit over issues like this as spoiled prima donas, and men as bold go-getters.

6. Supposedly, Erin Andrews flies first class
I think that was another reason Stacey was pissed.
