Has any genre of music improved or progressed in the last 15-20 years?
Seriously? I can't think of any genre of music where the overall quality has gotten better or progressed in the past 15-20 years.

Rap has progressively gotten worse. It has morphed itself into auto-tuned club music free of any actual content or lyrical skill.

Rock has splintered into pop-shit, Nickleback clones, and whiny douchebags.

Pop has stayed stagnant since the late 80's, using rehashed beats and interchangeable "singers".

Metal has all but disappeared as a genre and all that is left is a morass of guttural shit with sloppy guitar work.

Country continues to drive itself off the cliff of adult contemporary/pop for old people.

As for other genres, I haven't really heard anything fresh or invigorating for years.

Am I just getting old?

1. i just don't listen to anything but classic rock and classic country anymore
every once in a while in the past few years some good rock or pop music has emerged, dont' even get me started on new country; everyone is dying, has cancer, songs about glory days in years past and how we should all appreciate life....not to mention it seems like country music all sounds the same now. And there for a while there was this rock rap thing going on....some planes should never cross paths :(

5. Are you slamming RATM with "the rock rap thing"?
While I agree they don't appeal to everyone sound and harshness wise (my wife Thtwudbeme hates them) at least they wrote most of their lyrics and played their own instruments. Plus they were slamming the excesses and abuses of our economic and political system. I still love them plus I realized today that their 1st big record is now almost 20 years old...

I must admit however, outside of RATM and grunge, in general my favorite music is generally from the 70's and 80's. Classic rock and classic country are the best. Especially Willie Nelson and John Denver (not sure what genre he was a part of) who both always make my day.

9. RATM wants Susan Boyle to join them on stage in London in June...
http://www.bbcamerica.com/content/23/anglophenia.jsp?bc_id=1614

De La Rocha told The Sun: "We love Susan Boyle, she is hot. To show there are no hard feelings we would like her to perform with us on stage this summer. She is a great vocalist and we would love to perform 'Killing In The Name' with her. Everybody knows her in the U.S. and she can add her vocals to anything. It would be an honor for us."

If you've never heard "Killing in the Name," the song's much-repeated refrain is "F*** you, I won't do what you tell me!" And we all know that, behind Susan's spinster exterior, there's a foul-mouthed beast-woman just throbbing for an artistic outlet to unleash her anger.

12. Well, we know she's well-versed on using the 'f' word, noun, adjective, etc.
Give her some Buckfast and send her out there to channel her inner Joe Cocker that's crying to get out!

7. Pop has gotten better. More craft and more fun
Singer-songwriter and indie are really thriving.

Rock isn't the best right now; too many sound-alikes.

Country has stayed about the same, even though I don't buy as much of it.

But I feel we'll just have to agree to disagree, as our tastes seem different.

17. I agree about pop
There has been a lot of great pop music in recent years.

Country has changed. It has become more and more pop. Many of the most popular country singers are more pop artists than country artists (Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift).

Country also isn't one of my very favorite genres anymore.

13. Actually, most non-mainstream work of all genres has improved.
The worst of the worst will continue to dominate radio/TV, but the good stuff is just harder to find.

16. Music is always progressing.
But what gets played by the mainstream media is always taking what is "in",then sucking all the life out of it with what they hope will sell.

...deep house, chill, trip hop, etc., have carried things forward. France and Latin America have exploded in great music. It's there if you want to find it.

Good stuff happening there.
Early 90's was excellent for new and creative styles. I think we're headed into another good cycle right now.

But, you and I aren't going to hear it unless we spend significant time looking for it.

We're sure not going to find it served up to us. That's not cost effective.

25. Getting old?
While I agree with some of your opinions, I think its because we are both getting old. There is great music made every day. Its just different. Great rock music is not on top 40 stations or classic rock stations. Its not always commercial, so its harder to find if you use traditional sources for new music. That does not mean its not there. There is incredible rock out there, and with internet based music, its not hard to find and follow if you think like a "kid". Its on social networks and internet radio.

Mainstream hip hop/rap is garbage. But there are still good artists out there. Like Immortal Technique, Naz, Common (At least he used to be), KRS-1, Former members of Public Enemy etc...

Theres groups in Rock and Metal that don't get any recognition either because its not marketable anymore.
