Dream of a Miner's Child
A miner was leavin' his home for his work
He heard his little child scream
He went to the side of his little girl's bed
Oh, daddy, I've had such a dream

Oh, daddy my daddy, oh don't go away
For dreams have so often come true
Oh, daddy my daddy, oh don't go away
I never could live without you

I dreamed that the mine was all covered with flame
The men all fought for their lives
Just then the scene changed, and the mouth of the mine
Was covered with sweethearts and wives

Oh, daddy my daddy, oh don't go away
For dreams have so often come true
Oh, daddy my daddy, oh don't go away
I never could live without you

Go down to the village and tell your dear friends
As sure as the bright stars do shine
There's somethin' that's goin' to happen today
Oh, daddy, don't go to the mine

Her daddy was smilin' and stroking her hair
Was turning away from her side
But throwin' her small arms around daddy's neck
She gave him a kiss and then cried

Oh, daddy my daddy, oh don't go away
For dreams have so often come true
Oh, daddy my daddy, oh don't go away
I never could live without you

1. Another one, "Mother of a Miner's Child " -Gordon Lightfoot

http://uk.video.yahoo.com/watch/161119/1149736

Mother of a Miner's Child

She is my flower
And she blooms for the one who loves her best
The miners stop to watch as she walks
They know her love is not for sale
She will never fail me 'cause I know
I watch her grow
And the mother of a miner's child
Waits for me beside the kitchen door
She is my light
In this place where the darkness never ends
She'll guide me where the tunnels twist and bend
She's the only one who listens when I tell her
I got less than I can spend
She knows the pace
Oh mother of a miner's child
Was away the coal dust from my face

When the night shift's done
She'll be waiting by the table when I come
Searchin' for another dream to chase
Oh mother of a miner's child
I know that you still think about the day
When we'll be movin' on
Remember dear old Daddy and
The promise that I made to carry on

Sometimes I smile
In the cage where the cables softly hum
I'd curse that old straw boss to the bone
But the mother of a miner's child
Is waiting for her paycheck to come home
Come Saturday
And he is just a miner's boy
I hope that he will find a better way

She is my flower
And she blooms for the one who loves her best
The miners stop to watch as she walks
They know her love is not for sale
She will never fail me 'cause I know
I watch her grow
And the mother of a miner's child
Waits for me beside the kitchen door

2. a different kind of mining tragedy song.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PGGlepa-_U

Lydie lit a cigarette today
Ancient fumbling fingers in her way
From a forty-year-old coffee cup, she sipped a bit of gin
Closed her eyes and let the memories in
She lives in the old place all alone
Keeps in touch with neighbors by the phone
Grows roses upon the graves of her first born and his father
And the coal trucks never bothered her...

"...Oh, Lydie let him go, the boy is gone
Her mother struggled as she tore him from her arms
Oh, Lydia, your tears are heaven's rain
But she never was the same..."

A cotton dress and satin shoes
Indian summer sun, dressed in amber hues
Spending time with a coal-miner's son
To an old-time fiddle tune

The months blew by just like a breeze that year
They wed in June and by the fall the boy was here
Word come down from big stone, there's a fire in the mine
And eleven men they couldn't find

"...Oh, Lydie let him go, the boy is gone
Her mother struggled as she tore him from her arms
Oh, Lydia, your tears are heaven's rain
But she never was the same..."

She watched them pull him from the hole
The overalls he wore were blackened by the smoke
Lydie twice had had this dream and twice it had come true
And when she saw his father's boots she knew..."

"...Oh, Lydie let him go, the boy is gone
Her mother struggled as she tore him from her arms
Oh, Lydia, your tears are heaven's rain
But she never was the same..."
