4. It's part of a large scientific instrument.
A one-billion pixel camera for a large telescope.

6. The camera will cover a one-square-degree field
Edited on Tue Apr-13-10 08:39 PM by Ptah
http://www.noao.edu/wiyn/ODI/

The camera will cover a one-square-degree field of view which
will allow ODI to capture vast areas of sky, greater than four
times the area of the full moon, in a single image. A special
detector technology called Orthogonal Transfer Array (OTA) CCD
will be used to stabilize the images. Using OTA technology, ODI
will be able to compensate for image motion due to atmospheric
turbulence, telescope shake, and tracking errors by locally shifting
the image directly within the CCD. This exciting new instrument is
scheduled to begin commissioning in fall 2010.

Edit to add:

8. That's a beautiful instrument. One degree is actually a pretty big chunck of sky, no?
The image stabilization system sounds very sophisticated.

It's a beautiful thing!

11. Surprising to see it not entirely enclosed.
Even flying birds screw up and hit stuff, sometimes.
