CA DUers - need travel advice
I need to go to Thousand Oaks (I'm in New England). Is it best to fly into Burbank or LAX? On the flight side, I can fly non-stop to LAX, which is a plus. Does that plus outweigh driving from LAX to Thousand Oaks, or is the drive more or less the same in terms of LA traffic?

Thanks.

1. It is probably not worth the cost of Burbank.
Thousand Oaks is just up (snicker, giggle) the 405 over (bah haw ha) the Sepulvada Pass. No worries..

2. You know, you're not making me feel good about this trip
Your rofl smilie is not encouraging. Remember, I live in rural New England. My idea of a traffic jam is when I have to sit through two series of stoplights. We have a rush minute. Now, I've lived in big cities (not LA big, though) - I just don't like them.

So, how bad is up (snicker, giggle) the 405 and over (bah haw ha) the Sepulveda Pass. And, if you're old enough, you probably realize that sounds like the start of a Johnny Carson joke.

7. I live about 1 mile from the 405.
The picture below was probably taken two or three years ago. The lanes on either side are now complete. The spot is halfway between the Sepulveda Pass and my house.

The big question here is what time is your flight arriving and what time is it leaving?

The best day times are between 10:00am to 11:00am or 1:30 to 2:30pm to beat feet up the pass to the valley. Heading from the valley to LAX the best times are after 10:00am and before noon, most week nights heading down from the valley are bad until 8 or 9pm, maybe.

Weekend nights are bad until after 10 or 11pm but you could still hit some traffic at midnight. I don't notice the traffic anymore for two reasons, I live in the "Southbay Bubble" and rarely feel the need to venture out, secondly I am a fourth generation Angelino, to me it's just the way it is.

BTW I just celebrated my 52 birthday so I am a big (former) Carson fan.

8. Thank you all
I'm going to shoot for Burbank, and if that doesn't work out, then I'll try to follow Denbot's suggestions. Of course, that's like a lot of mom and pop businesses that have signs that read something along the lines of we're open from monday through friday 9-5, except when we feel like sleeping in, and then we get in at 11, take a lunch break of two hours at noon, and maybe knock off early some days, etc. I think the window for minimizing traffic woes is about 15 minutes.

How do you people live there? And, more importantly, how do the cops on the cop shows make it from place to place in only minutes?

3. I'd say it's a toss-up. Check Kayak.com
You may just find a non-stop into Burbank (BUR).

It is served by Alaska Airlines, America West, American Airlines,Delta Airlines, Jet Blue, Southwest and United.

I often find better direct flights there than I can find to LAX, so it's worth checking.

The drive is a toss up, traffic can suck either way.

:hi:

9. Thanks for the advice
I haven't used Kayak before - mainly Expedia, and then I usually head to the airline's site and get a slightly better rate. Nonstop from NY may be possible, but not from Boston, so we're looking at one stop at least. Not a big problem.

Thanks.

4. I'd fly into Burbank. I've had to fly twice this year on business
and fortunately I live in Studio City (which is very close to Burbank). It's a mellow airport - I'd never flown out of there before. LAX is just too much (for me) and the drive from LAX to Thousand Oaks could be a nightmare. Friends of mine and I have a joke that there's no "rush hour traffic" because it's almost always rush hour traffic (except in the middle of the night, really early in the morning, and off the wall times).

5. Burbank is a quaint
little airport, compared to LAX. But LAX is right on the freeway so it's probably six of one, half dozen of the other.

6. I live right near Thousand Oaks. Fly into Burbank if possible. The traffic
through the Valley from Burbank to TO is awful, but the traffic on the 405 from the LAX area into the Valley is worse. I assume you are coming on business of some sort. TO is a sleepy suburban town with not much to do. I'm happy to answer any other questions you might have. I've lived here since '79 and know the area thoroughly.
