Is the attention span of humans devolving with time ?
how did we move from musical structures that spanned hours in the 19th century to the current 3 minute rule for most popular music these days.

I would like to think that music got more concentrated ... but that is not true.

1. I don't think it's just music
for example.

4. No, but there are casualties
I don't see being able to deal with a wide barrage of input as being devolution, and I'd be willing to bet that most people from today could easily take on the more "relaxed" one-thing-deeply style from the 19th century, but I'm not so sure that a transplanted 19th century person could handle the cacophony of 21st century life.

5. Oops, forgot the casualties...
I do think that we have lots of people that can't handle the rapid-fire inputs of today and in some cases, they never really develop the means to control and sort the inputs effectively.

6. The 3 minute limit dates from the 1920s
when phonograph records spun at about 78 rpm. One side of a 10-inch disk would last only three minutes. A collection of such disks, which opened like a book, was called an "album".

7. I had a friend...
.
...in an all-original pop-punk band in the 90's who used to
say, "If I can't say it in two-and-a-half minutes... fuck it."
.
HIS music was intense and concentrated.

8. It is a forced,artificial deevolution
brought about primarily by music and television.
IMO,hfcs also plays a part.
I also think the short attention span on many topics on DU are brought about by the two day time limit on showing postings on My DU.

9. I saw a 3 1/2 hour+ concert last Friday.
And it was a metal band - Opeth. The first set lasted nearly an hour, while the second set lasted almost two.

11. In the 50s most songs on the radio were under 2 minutes. Today most are over 3.
I win. Give me money.
