Can anyone recommend some good free anti-virus/computer protection?
something that is effective and doesn't take up too much room?

2. I use AVG free antivirus.
Iobit freeware is good at cleaning things up on my pc.

9. Second that. I use Comodo along with Spybot Search and Destroy
That should take care of most problems..

8. Avast usually is rated very highly by CNet.com, etc.
Before I had company-provided antivirus, I used Avast. It was free. It automatically downloaded virus updates. It was completely unintrusive. I'd go back in a second if I didn't use what my company provides.

10. I second Avast-- I had Zone Alarm and AVG for years but they grew too...
big and slowed the machine down too much. Now Comodo and Avast work every bit as well and the box boots in half the time and and rarely slogs down now.

Malwarebytes is another essential.
