Hi guys... .could you give me some help?
I know you guys always have good ideas and I'm wondering if you could help me?

My mom has asked to borrow $1000 from my husband and I because of some taxes she owes. She will pay us back in July and Aug. I trust my mom but my husband wants a signed IOU. I want to be able to word it in a way that will not hurt her feelings or make her feel like she is not trusted.

Do you have any ideas for me?

1. nothing wrong with written contracts between family members - in fact
they are probably even more important than with business associates! Just put the details in and both parties sign it.

On such and such a date, Husband loaned Mom $ to be paid back by Date.

Add penalty or interest or whatever other considerations if there are any (enlist Mom in brainstorming) in case SOMETHING happens. Explain it is not personal, but what if something happend to her? That is a lot of money to some people (apparently to her as well if she needs to borrow so he could concievably need that document in the event of collecting against an estate or something) she should not have a problem with it if she needs to borrow, really.

3. I've been fortunate and so has my family that we haven't needed
much financial help from each other. I guess borrowing among family members isn't that strange.

Thank you for your advice. It helps.

2. How's this...
Because I love her and would do anything for her, I have loaned my mother-in-law, Mrs. X, $1,000.

Mrs. X and I have discussed and agreed on the following payback terms:

The full principle shall be repaid by the end of August 2010. The total amount of interest on this loan will be $X, bringing the total amount to be repaid by the end of August 2010 to $1,xxx.

We love you, mom.

5. I wouldn't loan money to loved ones unless I was prepared to just give it to them.
Whether or not they pay it back is up to them. I don't want to be concerned about such debts.
