Edited on Fri Apr-16-10 05:06 PM by Blue-Jay
1) William Hartnell

2) Patrick Troughton

3) Jon Pertwee

4) Tom Baker

5) Peter Davison

6) Colin Baker

7) Sylvester McCoy

8) Paul McGann

9) Christopher Eccleston

10) David Tennant

Personally, I have a soft spot for Tom Baker, but I really like the 9th & 10th versions of The Doctor.

3. Tom Baker IS The Doctor.
I met him in Milwaukee at a Whovian convention, really nice guy, I used to have an autographed picture of him but lost it in a move.

I can watch a lot of Dr. Who on Netflix streaming, but I just can't get into it that much.

22. If they can count Paul McGann, why can't they count Peter Cushing?
I guess because it was a different kind of "Doctor," but I liked that movie, mostly because it had The Cribbens in it (how I wish he was my Granddad--sigh....). And really, how can you go wrong with the Daleks?

I think all of them have their good points. I came in during Tom Baker's reign--never got it to it too much, but since that was my entry point, he was my Doctor--until the new series started. I'm now pretty partial to Eccleston and Tennant, and I've seen Matt Smith, and I think he will do just fine as well.

I just love that the show has such new energy and such enthusiastic fans. It's truly an amazing thing.

6. Hard to say
btw, you missed D11, Matt Smith. Granted, he's only had 2 eps (3 tomorrow) but still...

I came late to the game. Eccleston was my first doctor, and i think i prefer him to Tennant. But I also love a lot of what Tennant did with the part, especially fighting against that hack writer RTD.

10. Eccleston is my second Doctor. My first was
Jon Pertwee, that's right, way back in time to the early 70's and then nothing till some geeks were all fussed about some guy with a big scarf and a hat.

Hated Him!

Now Eccleston, a Doctor with Murder in his heart(or at least it looks that way), is my kind O'Doctor.

11. indeed
plus
"lots of planets have a north"

he had a sort of goofiness mixed with deadly sincerity that Tennant lacked. I see a little bit of it in Smith, but time will tell.

And, a point I've been wondering about. Is Eccleston really the 9th doctor? In his first ep, he had clearly just regenerated, as he hadn't seen his face before. So is Eccleston the one who ended the time war? or was that the doctor before him?

/nerd ;)

21. I also came in with Eccleston
never saw the old Dr Who - ok, I think once I saw an episode on PBS back when our PBS reception really sucked and I couldn't make heads or tails out of what was happening - I was also just a kid - can't even remember now when it was, though.

Liked Eccleston a lot. Liked Tennant, too, and I find it hard to say which I liked better.

Have to say, I mostly stopped watching when Rose Tyler left. She was a great character.

8. David Tennant, fuck yeah!
When someone mentions Dr Who, or I hear the theme music, the first face that comes to mind is Willam Hartnell's. First association is indelibly imprinted I guess, and especially on a young mind. Then Patrick Troughton - it was such a surprise to see a different face in the role and I had to make a conscious effort to "unlearn" Hartnell. Troughton's face has somehow become part of the file-flipping my brain goes through to arrive at the current answer. But before it does arrive, I see Tom Baker. Well he was such a likable fellow and also the longest-serving Doctor so far.

I found Christopher Eccleston a bit annoying, he seemed to shout most of his lines, no light and shade with him.

For style, grace, charm and decent acting David Tennant is my favourite. But then I was already besotted with him after "Casanova" and "Blackpool".

The latest series hasn't started screening in Australia yet but from the shorts I've seen I think I'm going to enjoy Matt Hill's Doctor.

"I'm not just A doctor, I'm THE doctor. The definite article, you might say!"

I love that line.

27. Baker.
And I just found out why the scripts were better when
Baker was the Dr.

"During the Fourth Doctor's run, in Season 17, the science fiction author Douglas Adams was script editor and his distinctive style can be seen in the dialogue and stories of some of the serials such as City of Death and The Pirate Planet. For example, in Destiny of the Daleks, Adams included a scene of the Doctor trapped under a boulder, that resembles of similar scene in the second series of The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Adams' tenure is controversial with fans, some of whom believe that the humorous stories are uncharacteristic of the series, and others who contend that the diversity of the storytelling was one of the series' strong points."

36. Weird. I didn't think anyone really liked McCoy.
If I had to go in order, I personally rank them:

Tom Baker
Tennant
Eccleston
Pertwee
Davison
Hartnell
McCoy
Troughton
McGann
Colin Baker

The last 5 or so are pretty much interchangeable to me in terms of how much I enjoyed their tenures as The Doctor. I didn't really dislike any of them, except for maybe Colin Baker.
