What to do about Kelsey Grammer?
I love his humor, but I can't stand his crappy right-wing politics. Do I watch him anyway or boycott?

I'm working my way through the seasons of Cheers on DVD (I'm up to Season 6), which also raises the issue of Grammer's fellow wacko John Ratzenberger, whom I also like comedically and can't stand politically.

What's with these guys? It reminds me of SNL alums Dennis Miller and Victoria Jackson, who seemed (somewhat) funny at first but turned rotten and went to the Dark Side. Now they are both insufferable right-wing shills.

The problem with the Cheers guys is much worse because unlike Miller and Jackson, they are actually funny and talented. And delusional. And seriously misguided.

PS. Please don't tell me that David Hyde Pierce is a right-wing nutjob as well. That I could not take.

1. If you like it, watch it.
As long as they don't force in their political views into their work itself, why deprive yourself of something you would naturally enjoy? You're bound to disagree with celebrities. I actually disagree with some celebrities who call themselves "liberal."

But to boycott just because of one's personal political philosophy just because? That's just stupid.

Hell, Craig T. Nelson is not only a conservative celebrity, but a dumb conservative celebrity. Do I enjoy "Coach" reruns? You betcha.

2. Note how Grammer and Ratzenberger's characters in those two shows are devoid of political content.

If they can separate their performance from their political views, I can too.

Edited to clarify "they"

4. Exactly.
Kelsey Grammer on "An American Carol"? Nope.
Kelsey Grammer on "Cheers"? Knock yourself out.

13. I've got the official "Frasier" handbook of the show. Grammer is a repuke,
but the book says Frasier Crane is a Dem. Good enough for me. I love watching reruns of "Frasier". It is completely apolitical, and the social issues it dealt with on rare occasions seemed to lean left, so I'm cool.

I will NEVER watch "An American Carol", or any other deliberate attempt at right-wing humor. I prefer it when they are merely unintentionally hilarious.

24. The Grammer character that best exemplifies his RW douchebaggery
is, of course, Sideshow Bob.

27. Yes! And that he plays a role that satirizes his own views says much about his professionalism.
Good call!

3. I really doubt David Hyde Pierce is a RW nutjob.
He's gay and he's married to his partner.

He's a big ol' liberal! Here's a list of his recent political contributions. He also came out a few years ago, too, iirc.

7. DHP is gay, so I seriously doubt he's a RW freak.
Possible, I suppose, but much more unlikely.

With actors/writers/etc. whose views I can't stand but whose work I enjoy, I just try not to give them financial support that could be used to support causes I don't agree with. Like, I enjoy mocking the shit out of Twilight, so I've read all the books, but got them used, because Stephenie Meyer is a Mormon and her tithes prob. helped support Prop. 8.

8. Boycott what? A show that's been gone for almost 20 years?
Which you've already watched 5+ seasons of and enjoy? On the DVD that you've already paid money for?

10. I'm able to separate fantasy from reality when it comes to "Cheers"...
...it's hard to say why. I don't care about his political leanings or Ratzenberger's and I still love the show.

I remember John Kerry's concession speech at Faneuil Hall in 2004. That same day, the news showed Jon Bon Jovi performing and saying "We need to let the healing begin" and I thought UP YOURS, we just got handed FOUR MORE YEARS of Bush and Cheney, and since then, I can't stomach the sight of the guy. I was never a fan of his music to begin with, but since those remarks, he's a non-entity to me.

12. Understood, but the "let the healing begin" thing killed me.
It was more of a matter of timing than anything else. It was within a heartbeat of Kerry's speech. I don't need Jon Bon Jovi as the voice of reason in my moment of anger.

16. Enjoy Frasier and Cheers - skip American Carol
DHP is not a wingnut - he's a solid progressive.

It's funny, Cheers - the writers of that show were good ol Hollywood Democrats. Same with Shelley Long and Ted Danson. They've had guest appearances by Sen John Kerry, as well as Tip O'Neil. The show gave us Woody Harrelson, another good ol progressive.

But damned if that show didn't give career to two of the stupidest RW nutjobs too...Kelsey and Ratzenberger.

19. I still count "Planet of The Apes" as one of my favorite movies.
I've known about Heston's political leanings for a long time, but that doesn't lessen my enjoyment of the movie or of his wonderfully schlocky performance in it. I'm also a big fan of the series "Frazier". It was always smart and funny, regardless of Grammer's personal beliefs. I could probably name dozens of actors and musicians whose political affiliations make me want to puke, yet I still enjoy the result of their art.

FFS, politics isn't the ONLY litmus test when considering what you will/will not appreciate with regards to entertainment/art/music/literature/etc.

22. I recently watched all Frasier episodes on youtube and loved it.
But now I'm working on 'Becker.' Grammer has a guest appearance there, too.

It's about the writers, anyway. I don't think either Heston nor Grammer wrote their own stuff. They're actors. And while 'Becker' truly bashes the Repukes, 'Frasier' was very unpolitical IMO.

25. That never stopped a right-winger from listening to the Beatles or other liberal artists.
As a Liberal, consider yourself lucky- it's not very often where you have to go to a RW for entertainment. It would be IMPOSSIBLE for a conservative to enjoy any artistic medium if he was to ban all Liberals. Us Libs are lucky- we dont really have to compromise on culture very often.
