Okay the burrito withdrawal thread got me thinking- What food do you miss where you live?
Something either you cannot get where you currently live or just is not the same in different regions?
I love Cincinnati Chili and although ONE chain here does have it ( Hard Times Cafe) its not QUITE as good as Skyline in Ohio ...
Plus I love the Cleveland Deli's (even better than NY Deli's to me) especially Chocolate Phosphates. Egg Creams are good but not quite the same..
PS does anybody know if Corky and Lenny's is still in business in Cleveland? What an awesome deli that was...

for the chains or there is this place called On The Border by a local mall here...they are pretty good

other than that, I'm sure there are places in Philly, but I never go down there :-( How you doin? :)

29. Tastykakes, you can buy...
.
...all across the country now.
.
Scrapple? I think the Hatfield Company motto for Scrapple is "Everything
but the Squeal". YUKKO!!!! There's a REASON why people cover it in a thick
blanket of ketchup. It's like chorizo here in the Southwest (but nowhere
NEAR as tasty).
.
I miss cheesesteaks most of all. There are a couple of Philly transplants
here with shops that are PRETTY good, but nowhere near the simple greasy
humongous goodness that I got hooked on.
.
There's a chain called Philly's Finest. When I first moved here, I went
there in hope of getting a pizza steak. At the time, the guy behind the
counter looked at me with a blank look on his face, suddenly brightening
to tell me that they DID serve cheesesteaks with BBQ sauce. :puke:
.
They have since made marinara sauce available... but I don't think anyone
involved in that chain has ever been ANYWHERE east of the Mississippi.
.
My folks retired out here in 1980 or so and I visited them once or twice
a year until I finally moved out here in 1998. Once, I agreed to bring
MiddleFingerMomDad a hoagie from Philly. I was on THREE different flights
to get here and NONE of them had anything more than the bag o' peanuts.
.
You have NO idea how tempted I was to tell MiddleFingerMomDad that I could
only afford to buy him HALF a hoagie.
.

46. I equate Scrapple with hot dogs -- if you understood what was in a hot dog...
Edited on Wed Apr-21-10 08:05 PM by BethCA66
the first time you were offered one, you'd never eat it.

I was raised on Scrapple (with syrup -- don't know anyone who puts ketchup on it - BLASPHEMY!), so I love it despite its dubious ingredients.

Yes, you can get most Tastykakes outside of Philly/NJ/DE and Canada now, but they don't tend to stock the entire selection.

My dad's a Native Philadelphian, and my mom's a South Jersey girl, so I have to code switch between "hoagie" and "sub."

BBQ sauce or Cheez Whiz on a cheesesteak is truly wrong. Everyone has they're favorite place to get cheesesteaks, and it's always in their neighborhood.

PSA: There is no such thing as a "Philly cheesesteak." It's just a cheesesteak, and it's like a huge hunk of butter working it's way to your heart.

22. Don't forget crab legs in the regular chains...
.
...and AJ's is a REMARKABLE place, but their seafood, although of
the highest quality, is priced accordingly or even more so.
.
I used to go there for their deli salads (not a big fan of tabbouleh,
but theirs is fantastic and I can now make caprese salad as good as
theirs -- not a difficult thing to do as it's so simple).
.
Their meat department usually had some GREAT sale items. I believe
friends of mine were paying $35/lb for their top-shelf ribeye steaks
(these friends are now in the process of bankruptcy).

I almost always treated myself to one of their pastries and got one
of their small-batch sorbets -- the ones made with a touch of wine.
.
And they had the GREATEST selection of baby vegetables and exotic
fruits of any place I have ever been (it's where I tried Grapples
for the first time and was given a Buddha's Hand by the department
manager). Each individual fruit and/or vegetable looks like it was
hand-chosen from a source that was high-quality to begin with.
.
Although VERY upscale, their staff is friendly and not the least
bit elitist. Even their "sommeliers" are friendly and don't talk down
to the "great unwashed" (as they are seen by many in that profession).
.
We used to brag to each other about how LITTLE we managed to
spend on an AJ's trip each time we went there -- it was so easy to
dump an entire paycheck without a second thought.
.
Haven't been able to afford to go there for quite some time now.
.

Lately AJs has been having great sales on meat and seafood... sometimes half price on some really nice steaks.
It let me try Kobe steaks for only (still yikes!!) $17/lb but I wouldn't have bought them otherwise.

I'm from Alabama, living in San Diego. You can't get boiled peanuts here. You can't even get green peanuts and boil them yourself. I have to get my mom to buy them and ship them to me.

Also, no decent BBQ that I've found. The watermelons aren't nearly as sweet.

And what they call peaches here are an atrocity. Chilton County peaches are to die for.

If they're done fresh, they're firm to the bite. Shouldn't be too salty, but you should be able to tell there's salt in the water.

DUers in Massachusetts will recognize the town of Beverly, which was about 20 minutes away from my home. My parents got pizza from a pizzeria that made authentic Italian pizza...thin crust, the whole deal. We also got "submarine sandwiches." 40. I think they call them "heroes" but I've had "subs" and there is a huge difference
subs ingredients remain intact...that is, they are usually not falling out of the sandwich, AND they usually include shit like black olives, green peppers, and alfalfa ( actually had that one once in Florida ) abominations that do NOT belong on a sandwich unless you ask for it.

A hoagie...well, you know what that is...you order an Italian Hoagie and they give you imported provolone, imported ham, capicola (sp), cooked salami and anything else you specify you want on it...

Subs are an absolute disgrace

43. CLUTCH THE @#$@# PEARLS! WUT? WUT? Subs are hoagies found outside Philly
The Best Place in the World for subs is Atlantic City's White House Sub Shop. But you have to know how to order, and you have to tip the guys even if it's take out.

At The White House, an Italian hoagie is known as a "regular" and they serve them dry unless you request mayo. If they get to know you and you are a regular tipper, they give you extra meat. If the sub is only for one person, you order a half, because a whole is a foot long, and subs don't keep well. If you do refrigerate a sub, cut about a half inch off the cut end (or wherever you stopped noshing), because that roll will break your teeth. The peppers are the best I've had ever, and they're diced fine.

Sheesh, you guys!

50. Rolls certainly make the difference in a hoagie, but what you describe
shouldn't call for a request for "extra meat" because if you order a hoagie here and ask for extra meat guess what?....you're getting ripped off! Places like Lee's are good for that though...you don't have to ask for extra meat since you get plenty of it to begin with

They've seen me grow up (and grow old) over many summers, so they recognize me, they know my family, etc. It's like Koch's Deli in West Philly. 45. I'm also a Cincy native.
I miss Skyline Chili and Graeters ice cream. The absolute best ice cream I have ever had. I also miss being able to buy goetta in the grocery store. I think Cincinnati (with its German heritage) may be the only place that sells it. I have not found it in any other city in which I have lived, Actually, most people have no idea what I am even talking about. My grandmother used to make it, but I do not have the time.

55. Mexican, and really good, inexpensive, authentic Asian food.
Here in Maryland.

LA had such a huge influx of recent Asian immigrants that the food was very cheap, delicious, and not full of sugar and oil like the Americanized versions of these foods that predominate in this region. At much higher prices, too.

I have a couple of good Thai restaurants locally, but not the vast sea of choices I had out there.

and I've been to Hard Times many times, by the way.

56. Round one-GO!
When I'm on campus, I miss real Mexican food, even the nommy burrito place isn't really Mexican, it's ...wonderfully odd things like Philly steak and cheese and potato wrapped up in a tortilla. When I'm home, I miss Asian, especially the awesome red-bean paste balls and pork dumplings from the little local place on campus. Curse living in two places at once!

(Great, now I want a burrito, too!)

58. i am living in texas now, as opposed to calif. imagine all the foods.... i dont have
we took a trip there a month ago. we drove, so we were in a lot of restaurants. a "to die" for eggplant sandwich, chowder, fish, indian food, cantonese chinese, baklava, sees candy, scones, soudough bread (i am really disappointed in the choices of breads in texas), waldorph chicken salad sandwich on the really nutty whole grain breads.....

i could go on. and on. and on

i had an orgasmic trip of food for over a week on this trip. every meal, everyone got something different and i got to taste a little of everything.

our one fish restaurant hubby could get some good crab... chain joes crab shack was closed a couple months ago and ANOTHER steak restaurant was put in its place.

There are some decent Mexican places and a few half-decent BBQ places, but they don't compare to the real thing.

62. Grew up in Buffalo, NY - PIZZA AND WINGS, DAMMIT!!!!!!
I live in a great college town in Iowa, but sadly, there's no pizza place even close to the best local places (and there are many) in Buffalo!

As far as wings, I'm willing to say that Buffalo Wild Wings actually does a passable job with their wings. I have two of them right here in town, so cravings are easily satisfied. That still doesn't mean my mouth doesn't begin to water as I'm planning one of my visits back to Buffalo to see my family, and make a side trip to Duff's...the MECCA of chicken wings for all true wing lovers!

Oh, I should have also mentioned the beef on weck sandwiches! Sliced roast beef (on the rare side), piled high on a kaiser-type roll that's liberally covered with kosher salt. Heaven on a bun! No one does it better than Charlie the Butcher!

Yes, real wings, pizza, and beef on weck. I'd also add real horseradish (not the creamy blended kind) macaroni salad and a fish fry.

Man, I'm hungry, now.

Lox...again nada.

88. In-N-Out Burgers.
Best chain fast food hamburgers ever.

Living in FL, I'd have to drive to Arizona to find the closest In-N-Out.

And although I never lived in Louisiana but used to travel across I-10 regularly, I miss the HELL out of some good Boudin. There is this little shack (literally) of a restaurant off I10 at the west side of the Atchafalaya swamp that has the best Boudin and red beans and rice that I've ever had.

I'm glad I don't have to drive over the road anymore but I do miss the various regional foods I used to enjoy.

93. turnip greens w/cornbread, white beans, & sweet corn so fresh it yells
when you drop it in the boiling water.

When I lived in Boston I missed those things passionately, and good pork barbecue. I could not find white selfrising cornmeal in the entire Boston area or white beans (not Navy Beans)

Then I lived in Nashville and missed real Pizza and sub sandwiches and good chinese food

Then I lived in Indiana and missed pulled pork barbecue again and Krystals

Now I live in Texas and most of these things can be found if I hunt enough.

I can even find Cincinnati Chili mix @ Kroger. (I never lived there, just discovered it on a visit and loved it!!!)(

I KNOW I would miss all the abundant Mexican and TexMex food if I were to relocate. Although, the little guys with the green freezer carts are selling popsicles in Nashville now. LOVE THOSE THINGs

Most of all if I left this area I would miss CENTRAL MARKET
