Looked out my back window and saw a bunch of feathers. Thinking that my dog had found a dead bird and was devouring it, I went outside to find my dog circling a live bird. I chased him away and saw that the bird couldn't fly and had a green tag on its leg with several markings. My guess is that the bird landed in the yard, but since it is used to being handled by people, it wasn't afraid of the dog and the dog got hold of it.
I called my dog to get him inside, but before he came he grabbed the bird in his mouth to bring it with him! I had to yell at him to drop the bird and then locked him inside the house. I put the pigeon in a plastic bin with a towel and started calling numbers: animal control, veterinary hospital, humane society, but nobody had any experience with tagged pigeons. Eventually I got a call from a lady who said she had tracked the bird to a pigeon club in Texas. I live in Missouri, so the bird was a long way from home. Hopefully, the humane society will be able to fix the bird and send it back on its journey. It's too bad my dog is so mean to other animals, I felt pretty bad for the bird.
