A new guy came on where I work at a couple of years ago. I'll call him John. We're truckers and they hired John to fill in for other drivers when they needed time off. We call those guys floaters. There was another floater who was supposed to train John on a route one night not long after John came on. I'll call the other floater Dickhead for reasons that you will soon know.
So, Dickhead took John out one night and had a problem with him. He said that John was stupid and lazy and wouldn't help him out on the route. All I knew about John was that he was a quiet guy and seemed kind of shy. I'd only met him once and didn't talk to him for very long. Dickhead told every driver in the place that John wasn't any good. Dickhead hadn't been working there for too long himself and no one really knew about Dickhead being a dickhead so a lot of the drivers took his word for it and the consensus about John was that he was stupid and lazy.
I've had the opportunity to get to know John a little better since then. He's still a floater and he rides with me and helps me out sometimes when he doesn't have to fill in for anybody. He also has done my route when I needed time off and he did a fine job. John knows computers like the back of his hand. He's been a trucker for 20 years and knows trucking even better than he knows computers. He's a nice guy and always looks for the good in people.
Dickhead got fired for being a dickhead. Cussed out the boss one day when he couldn't get his way. He had a damn good job, too. I don't know what happened that caused Dickhead to spread lies about John. But I know the real John and I don't think he would have done something to deserve that kind of treatment.
