And do you think that she usually spends her day dressed like that, or only when she's being filmed?

10. Well...
I'm not comfortable with the "real" label, but I won't go into it again right now.

However, the only thing I can think of that might distinguish the Victoria's Secret commercials from the Lane Bryant ad is that the LB model is almost certainly going to meet Dan for a nooner, and it may be this clear implication of Teh Sex that's made the networks squeamish.

No matter how revealing those Victoria's Secret ads might be, they don't (AFAIK) show any of the models dashing out to meet their lover for a lunchtime quickie.

Definitely not saying that I agree with their decision, but there may be more to it than "they don't want to show a full-figured model."

14. It is realistic for some women to be skinny without having an eating disorder.
Just as it would be wrong of me to look at a woman and pass judgment on her because she's bigger than me it would be wrong of me to look at a woman as less real or realistic and assume she has a disorder because she's smaller than me.

17. THANK YOU.
I'm on the small side, I always have been (except when I was pregnant, but my son was freakishly big) and I eat like it's going out of style. I wouldn't assume that a larger woman overeats, but I get comments all the time from people who apparently assume that I don't eat enough or simply choose to comment on my frame, and who apparently seem to think that that's either okay or even some sort of desirable striking out against oppression.

Fuck that shit. Mistreating people based on their bodily traits is wrong no matter what those traits are. Full stop.

didn't address what you saw as the real problem.

Reading your post right now, the proverbial light bulb comes on. I have a friend who is small boned, very slim, and can put away mountains of food without the gazillion calories ever showing. She gets the anorexic/bulimic remarks all the time. No one believes that a woman could be so petite unless she subsists on a lettuce leaf per day. She is often put on the defensive.

We're all "real women". Slender, not so slender, more on the voluptuous side... whatever. We're women, desirable, smart and wonderful.

There was nothing in the ad that mentions a nooner, and one shouldn't suggest that meeting someone of the opposite sex for lunch is some kind of euphemism for such. If that's the excuse censors used it's a damn lame one.

58. You said they're banning the ad because this woman is hot,
whereas the VS models are like mannequins.

Are you implying that your opinion, and your opinion alone, is the reason they banned this ad, and not the VS ads?

In other words, this thread is not about what you think is hot, but why one ad was banned and not another.

Does that clear it up?

I think it's all about the cleavage. I hate that when I go shopping with my size 4 friend and she tries something on and it looks just fine/nice/respectable whatever. I pick up the same thing in a size 10 and it definitely does not look quite as, um, demure? Unless it's a turtleneck or something, I will make it look cleavage-ey, just can't help it

I'm not giving up v-necks or sleeve-less tops to avoid cleavage and "side-boob". It is what it is. And I'm not wearing a jacket over all that when it's 90 degrees, either. Gotta be me, gotta be free.

22. Isn't that the truth! It's like "implied cleavage".
Also bad--sports bras seem to enhance cleavage even if they cover the whole chestal area, and I wear them a lot for comfort's sake--but sports-bra+turtleneck would = projecting too much boobage. Even though I'm swaddled like a newborn in January. Everything is covered, but aesthetically, somehow I'm Breasty McBoobatron. I have a suggested uniboobimusmaximus. No one knows what my "girls" are plotting, undercover like that. Only that they are unified, and hanging together.

I spend more on alterations then I do on the dress sometimes, just because I have a big rack DOES NOT mean I have no waistline. When I ordered my wedding dress a brazillion years ago I had to buy a size 16 to get the girls in and then the alterations everywhere else screwed up the lace on the bodice, looked like I had a huge doily going across my waist instead of a small diamond of lace

18. I suggest that everyone go and get a copy of
Crystal Renn's book: Hungry.

Crystal has been a model since she was "discovered" at about 14 and as such, she pretty much starved herself to death as a result. Some of the pictures of herself when she was thin are pretty devastating.

She was getting ready to give up modeling forever, when she was able to become a "plus" size model (read: healthy, NORMAL) instead. Very interesting read from someone who essentially became anorexic in order to stay a model.

19. I think there's an unspoken thing where the more skin you have, the less you're
supposed to show. I don't agree with it. I'm closer to that woman's size than standard models, and I really like seeing someone more voluptuous shown with skin and with confidence.

Women who have a stomach, whose thighs touch, who can hold a pencil under their breasts, usually are shown wearing a lot of clothes.... and are probably depicted as the best friend of the girl going out for a rendez-vous. If you are over a size 12, it's like the media depicts you as defined by your size, as in, probably on a diet, off one, or thinking of starting one. Not as confident and not as sexy.

My experience is that that isn't how it necessarily is in reality. I think all women, of whatever size, should feel comfortable with who they are because we're all different, and there are many different opinions of what's hot out there. I think it's odd that a full-figured model's ad is being banned when I think it might play if a similar ad was done with a size 4 model. It disappoints me because I am Lane Bryant's market--a bigger woman who does shop for how I look and feel in clothes. I almost feel like they are shooting down *my* plus-sized right to be objectified. (Being a feminist and body-positive is giving me weirdly conflicting scripts, somedays....)

27. I don't either, But I can see where, if the history of our species
was centered in experiencing periods of famine, we'd be more genetically prone to look for evidence of fat-storing capability and sex characteristics, like wide hips or full mammaries, that imply robust reproduction and physical endurance. I think our tendency towards obesity in todays' society has a lot to do with genetics programmed to survive famines being exposed to our more calorie-rich present. To some extent, we should see the "calorie-conservation" fat-bearing result of sedentary, food-rich modern life as desireable. It's how we were evolved, from periods when food sources weren't secure. We're the fat progeny of survivors. But another part of our genetic heritage is neoteny. Leaner specimens appear younger, and are often healthier. So there might be also an impulse to seek out a younger (looking) mate, also in the interest of producing healthier offspring. So even if fat once = survival, lean might also signal healthier future progeny.

I see all of these things in terms of evolutionary gambles. I'm iffy on ghosts.

33. I really don't understand how...
These shriveled up, food-deprived corpses that pass for "models" are seen as sexy, yet a normal looking woman isn't allowed on TV. Some of them look like they're about to die, and since the TV adds a few pounds, they must look even worse in real life.

The hillarity is, the woman in the commercial could probably still be considered somewhat skinny. We all know how "normal" weights of Hollywood and modeling agencies are just women at different stages of death from anorexia. Sad.

36. the priorities of the networks are seriously screwed up
seeing the ad - well, um...I don't see anything at all wrong with it.

She's not in any way "fat" - though by Hollywood standards, I suppose she's a porker :eyes:

Ridiculous. She just isn't skin over a skeleton - she might actually be HEALTHY. The horror.

And to those who are bothered by the fact that she's clearly heading out to meet "Dan" - so freaking what? Maybe the Victoria's Secret ads don't show that, but...the shows on Fox and ABC sure as hell have more suggestive content than that. To say it's about that is disingenuous, IMO.

My impression is that it's all about her NOT looking anorexic. And therefore not subscribing to the entertainment industry's standard of beauty.

44. I would agree that the lady is, indeed, SMOKIN' HOT!
However, I would also agree that being even mildly forthright about sex (nobody says Dan can't be her hubby...) is the big violation. If she was stringing the guy along, or teasing her neighbor, or competing with her girlfriends, that would be OK.
BTW, in my experience, it's jocks who are averse to strong, shapely women - but it is well-shaped muscle under the subcutaneous fat that makes the curvy girls pleasing to the eye. Examples? Shania Twain, Danica Patrick, Sheryl Crow, Brooke Burke.

65. She's absolutely beautiful
Whomever said she outshines the women currently on "DWTS" is right.

God FORBID some plus-sized woman was sneaking out in her underwear for a romantic encounter! After all, everyone knows that any woman who weighs more than 120 pounds is never, ever having sex. EVER! She's repulsive!

:sarcasm:

Good for you, Ashley, and another shout-out to Lizzi Miller, another gorgeous plus-sized model
