Lasted 4 years had a captial and everything...now it is part of Tennessee.

All of this and more .... On the History Channel: How the States Got Their Shapes.

Very interesting...they should be teaching this in school as part of history...might make history more interesting and definitely help in understand why things happened and the consequences of actions.

It is 2 hours long and I'm recording it to rewatch as there is so much info it is hard to get it all this late at night!

4. Did they point out that Franklin himself didn't know it was named after him?
When he was told about it, he confessed he thought the name of the community was Frankland and that it was named after France. It's amazing how much information wasn't generally circulated about the world at that time. The entire country of Japan was hermetically sealed off from the world back then. Con artists at that time could just make up a country and say they were the king from there and whole societies would believe them, including professors and monarchs.

5. How states got their shapes
I've always wondered about that little sliver of West Virginia that tries to pry Ohio away from Pennsylvania.
And that chunk of land that the Missouri "bootheel" digs out of Arkansas.
Not to mention why Michigan was created from two big, entirely separate peninsulas, rather than being made into two states.
