Favorite Roller Coasters?
Tommy_C's Disneyworld thread got me thinking about this.
My top three are:
The Beast, Kings Island Ohio..Longest wooden coaster in the world

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Beast_(roller_coaster)
The Son of the Beast (same park)

And The Volcano from Kings Dominion in Virginia..

1. I'll second the Volcano.

Awesome coaster. Just awesome.

Although Son of the Beast looks pretty cool as well.

The Hulk at Universal Studio's Islands of Adventure is a good one.

13. Son of the Beast has the only loop on a wooden coaster
that I know of. The original is pretty damn good though

4. I love Lightening Racer but I'm so old school I have to admit the Comet still rocks
I grew up on that roller coaster (grew up 20 miles from Hershey).

Lamest Roller Coaster - Super Dooper Looper. Hershey should just tear that coaster down although it is a good starter rollercoaster for a young child doing their first looping coaster.

(btw my first looping coaster outside of Super Dooper - the Beast in Virginia)

8. I went on the Super Dooper Looper the year it opened - there was NOTHING else like it!
Yeah, with the Great Bear and Storm Runner, it seems a little mild now but it was a real trip when it first came out. I still like to ride it - nice mellow fun ride with no line.

The Comet is starting to worry me a bit. The damn thing doesn't even stay on the tracks at some points. So far it hasn't had a wreck, but it is good for a headache. Curiously, it always has a long line.

3. Space Mountain
at Disneyland, for the darkness, music, the queue and loading station, really the entire experience is more than just a roller coaster ride. Same for the Matterhorn too, it's much more than just a roller coaster, it's the total theme, atmosphere, effects seen along the way, the whole package. However Tatsu at Magic Mountain is pretty awesome.

5. I have so many.
I'll just go by theme parks.

Colossus, X and Deja Vu at Magic Mountain. I would have included Psyclone but they tore it down.

The Volcano and The Grizzly at King's Dominion.

Apollo's Chariot, Alpengeist and The Griffon at Bush Gardens.

Montezooma's Revenge at Knott's Berry Farm.

The Big Dipper at Mission Beach (one of the last stand alone wooden coasters on the West Coast)

... And I really like the music they play in the car when you ride the revamped Space Mountain at Disneyland.

9. 3M -
Millennium Force, Maverick, Magnum XL. All at Cedar Point.

The Beast at King's Island isn't bad either.

14. Cedar Point might be the best park for coasters in the US.
I really need to get there. I went once or twice as a child...

Every other day in the late 80s-early 90s summers, we'd go and stand up on the Gemini and Blue Streak. Can't do that now . . . they have more secure bracing. We also had friends that worked there who'd give us free Cheeseburgers and then ride with us when they got off their shifts.

I think sometime this summer, we're getting the old crew together and going there again. Those really were the best times, although there'd be two things I'd change -

1. Have today's rides back then.
2. Have the old video games in place of the new ones (CP's Arcade has LOTS of retro machines, but only half of them work).

22. Cedar Point was great
I used to visit my grandparents and assorted family near Toledo every summer, and we always got to go to Cedar Point at least once while I was there (early-to-mid '80s).

I'd love to go check it out sometime as an adult.

10. I'd probably say Viper at Magic Mountain.
Although I hate that knock in the head it gives you at the end. I mean, what the fuck.

11. It's not as much fun now
I remember standing in line for 2 hours to ride that thing 20 years ago. Last time I went to MM I was kind of 'meh' over it. Plus, X is right next to it and holy hell, is that a ride.

23. The Loch Ness Monster at Busch Gardens is pretty cool.
Interlocking loops, and a great setting. The whole thing is suspended over a lake, and at one point it drops you *into* the lake, via an artfully disguised tunnel.
