If You Could Pick any Road/Highway to be Named after Yourself, What would it Be?
I saw on ESPN that a stretch of highway has been named after Alabama running back Mark Ingram. So it got me thinking on what road/highway I want.

I'm thinking Madbadger's Jersey Turnpike.

5. Highway 666 in New Mexico too, that finally got renamed ( or renumbered)

SHORTY No. 2
Hitchhiker on the Devil's Highway
In the Northwest section of New Mexico lies a stretch of Federal Highway 666. This piece of road has had more accidents and deaths than any other thoroughfare in the state. It is known by locals as the Devil’s Highway.

I am an inspector for the gas pipelines in the Northwest part of the state. I live outside Farmington, NM. One October morning I had a 10:00 A.M. meeting in Gallup, NM, which is about 120 miles from my home. I left home about 6:30A.M. figuring I would get some breakfast along the way. I traveled West on Highway 64 into Shiprock, NM where I turned South onto Highway 666. (and the rest of the story from that site):

http://www.weirdnewmexico.com/stories/shorty02.html

and :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_491#Elimination_and_renumbering_of_US_666

U.S. Route 491 (US 491) is a north–south U.S. Highway serving the Four Corners region of the United States. One of the newest designations in the U.S. Highway system, it was created in 2003 as a renumbering of U.S. Route 666. With the 666 designation, this road was nicknamed Devil's Highway because of the common Christian belief that 666 is the Number of the Beast.<2> This satanic connotation, combined with a high fatality rate along the New Mexico portion, convinced some people the highway was cursed. The problem was compounded with chronic sign theft. These factors led to two efforts to renumber the highway, first by officials in Arizona, later in New Mexico. Since the renumbering, as a result of safety improvement projects, fatality rates have decreased.<3>

13. Take the one that used to be named US 666, and change it back...
A bunch of stupidstitious asshats had the old one--which runs through parts of New Mexico, Colorado, and Utah--renumbered US 491.

9. Going-to-the-Sun Road ----> Ptah's Path
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Going-to-the-Sun_Road

Going-to-the-Sun Road is the only road through the heart of
Glacier National Park in Montana, USA. It was completed in 1932,
and it is the only road that crosses the park, going over the
Continental Divide at Logan Pass. A fleet of 1930s red tour buses
"jammers", rebuilt in 2001 to run on propane or gas, offer tours
on the road. The road, a National Historic Landmark and a
Historic Civil Engineering Landmark, spans 53 miles (85 km)
across the width of the park.

To be known as "HWY--here is where Twillig killed himself in a (stolen) Ferrari."

It's spectacular.

It closes down every winter due to snow accumulation. I like the sound of the Foxfeet Highway.

14. I-95 from Richmond, Virginia to Jacksonville, Florida
Not that it's particularly scenic, but in terms of nostalgia and sentimentality, it means a lot to me.

Family vacations from Maryland to Florida--we'd take US 301 and the Nice Bridge over the Potomac into Virginia, until we met I-95 just north of Richmond. Then it was on through North Carolina, South Carolina (with an obligatory stop at South of the Border, of course), Georgia, and about halfway through Georgia we'd start counting the miles to the Florida border. Finally, we'd hit the bridge over the St. Mary's River, my father would sing a sanitized version of "Swannee River" (not the most PC of songs in retrospect, but I still have a soft spot for it nonetheless) and we'd stop at the Florida Welcome Center and get our Dixie Cup of Florida Orange Juice. Soon we'd hit Jacksonville, cross the mighty St. John's River, and finally exit off I-95 and onto US 1 just south of Jacksonville to begin our Florida vacation in earnest (usually in St. Augustine).

It usually took 2-3 days to accomplish, but I loved that drive. The anticipation, the special routines, it all had a special place in my heart. I wish I had the time to do a road trip like that with my family. Hopefully in a few years I will.
