3. I'm a John fanatic. To be able to do just the right thing at just the
right time is something he did often. He was a genius.

4. Watch the first 10 seconds of this. I believe this is an example of John "losing it" that night

5. "Surrendered to the moment."
He throws his head back, laughs out loud, and does the "elbow solo."

Rock & roll was always about spontaneous outbursts, about on-stage moments of glory.

In the 1970s, the Eagles took great pride in reproducing their hits note-for-note onstage, without a single variance from the studio versions.

John Lennon had chunks of guys like the Eagles in his stool (YES, a hat-tip to the late, great Phil Hartman's "Sinatra Group," http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFu_H4Bh_gM. )

6. +100
Your comment about the Eagles is why I hate certain acts (cough*SteelyDan*cough). Technique before passion is a surefire loser.

I know a lot of people like to goof on Bono for being kind of a self-righteous pain, but go back and watch clips of him on stage during the War/Unforgettable Fire era, climbing the scaffolding, breaking in to improvisational snippets from the Stones, Lou Reed, and whoever else came to mind.

That, kids, is what a rock and roll front man should do. Bono, Freddy Mercury, Roger Daltrey, not Glenn Frey and Don Henley!

7. I don't think it's necessary to trash studio rock to appreciate live rock.
I do find it amusing, however, that you include Freddy Mercury as an example of what a real frontman should do. Freddy Mercury and Queen were studio MASTERS as well as stadium showstoppers. It's just that the studio stuff (Bohemian Rhapsody in particular) does not always lend itself to live performance. Steely Dan? Studio masters as well. Live? Not always so hot.
