4. Marsden Hartley was one of the premier landscape artists of the 20th century.
Born in Maine, his striking use of color - and colored shadows inspired many artists around the world, including Georgia O'Keefe. (Alfred Steiglitz was a supporter of Hartley's.)

For some reason when I do these posts, I tend to post works that are different that the artist's larger body of work.

Although Hartley is primarily associated with his landscapes - usually landscapes of the American West - which are very beautiful, he often painted with surreal and ironic overtones. The work I have posted here is certainly both ironic and surreal, and though I cannot say what Hartley's intent was, he may have intended to express something about sanctity, that a sense of the sacred extends to those who may be rejected by the mass culture.

Hartley was openly gay at a time when gay life was (often violently) supressed.
