Lost Finale: The Dharma Initiative
Tuesday May 25, 2010
It's over. Lost is over. But happily for us fans, our constant perplexed analysis continues bravely on! Today I'll put my shoulder to the wheel (no, not the wheel of time down in that cold subterranean place--the wheel of dharma) and offer my reflections on how I felt the show well expressed some dharma.

1. Regard all dharmas as dreams.

If anything, this basic teaching of the Buddha was abundantly evident throughout the entire show. Especially considering the ending, which called into serious question the "reality" of the entire alternate "sideways" reality. In a way, the entire show, all the time our beloved characters spend on the island, reflected the impermanent and dream-like nature of reality. One can painstakingly tease out each and every scene, each and every flashback, flashforward, and flashsideways, each and every hallucination and vision, but in the end, the simple truth is that all of our experience is composed of dharmas, momentary appearances that follow one another in rapid succession. There is nothing solid or permanent about our experience. Rather, it's best to regard it all as a dream. Which is exactly what so much of Lost felt like, and exactly why it was so damn alluring and life-life

1. Yeah but that's not an explanation,
it's just more mystical drivel.

6. Makes sense if you understand Buddhism
Dharma is just "knowlege that eases suffering" - and this can be suffering in the long run or short term

2. This is fascinating
Not the article--it's fine--but I'm talking about the bigger picture. It's looking like LOST can be easily interpreted and aligned with every belief (and possibly nonbelief) system there is! Talk about universalism--everyone can adopt that show and get a "message" from it. Impressive.

5. Fits in with the Unitarian Church the funeral was in
At least I don't know of any other church that places the cross alongside the crescent moon and Yin Yang....

8. Totally disagree with "They could never fully understand the island ..."
"...because they were men of science, not men of faith."

At least not getting it - Science is all we have.

Look - I may lean Buddhist when it comes to happiness, but that's because Science's answer is both correct and irrelevant. Science says "Happiness is just a chemical cocktail" and "Fear is just a checmical cocktail." Its absolutely right but in the end irrelevant.

Ask the question "How do I become happy" and science has answers too - but all of them deal with controlling what you can, and letting be the things you can't.

Everything else is, irrelevant

And that is what this show was about.

For you. And for others who agree with you. But not for me, and not for others who would disagree with you.

Look, I'm not saying I have all the answers. And I'm in no way saying what I believe is correct. But I think it's very self-centered of you to declare what is truth for everyone.

I do hope you'll instead allow us our differences.

On edit: For clarification, I'm thinking that there's a place for science AND faith--that it's not a "one thing or the other"...on the island and in life.

10. I'll appreciate our differences...but I ask you to read Sagan
If you want to read about science with the same sense of wonder as held in spirituality - read some of his work

Start with Pale Blue Dot...first time I read this it was literally awe-inspiring
