MSNBC: Internet addicts guilty of starving baby to death
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37399937/ns/technology_and_science-tech_and_gadgets/

SEOUL, South Korea - A South Korean couple were convicted Friday of abandoning their newborn daughter, who starved to death while they addictively played an online game raising a virtual child.

The husband, a 41-year-old taxi driver, and his 25-year-old wife were sentenced to two years in prison, but the woman's term was suspended because she is pregnant.

The couple played at Internet cafes on average 10 hours every day and bottle-fed their baby only once a day, prosecutors said in an affidavit.

She's PREGNANT AGAIN! Holy fucking shit! She probably won't do ANY jail time and the asshole father is only going to do 2 years. And here I thought OUR criminal justice system was fucked up.

1. If they're that busy, how'd they get pregnant again?
I'm gonna guess there's more to this story than what we're hearing--alcoholism, mental illness, physical abuse... something.

As usual with these moral panic stories, there's something bigger going on that just society going to hell in a handbasket.

4. My first guess is that her "addiction" may be a function of post partum depression
Not that I entirely buy into the idea of internet addiction. It seems more like a symptom of some compulsive behavior disorder.

5. This reminds me of that TRULY disturbing scene...
.
...from "Trainspotting" where they discover the dead baby
that had simply been neglected and forgotten about.
.
I really LOVE that movie, but that is a scene that really
unsettles me every time I see it.
.

6. Hmmm how did I guess SK?
It sounds like internet addiction is a huge problem over there. I heard of one case where a kids starved himself to death playing games. I think it was World of Warcraft. And apparently the government is making a point of having rehab centers.

I guess this is the downside of being the country with the highest broadband penetration.

9. A couple kids a year die from this in China
but I think it's usually deep vein thrombosis from sitting so long. One kid played for something like five straight days without sleeping and then had a stroke.
