1. Definitely reboot.
Edited on Sun Mar-28-04 07:36 PM by HypnoToad
While it's rebooting, go eat some scrummy Marshmallow Peeps.

Once it's rebooted, try again. If it still fails, plug the iPod into another USB port.

The situation doesn't sound pretty though; it sounds as if there may have been a short circuit or something else nasty... :-(

On edit: Actually, do a full shutdown and power the thing off. Keep it off for 30 seconds. Then power on again...

3. I think something may have shorted...
Is the iPod totally dead, or does it light up when powered on?

7. Either the USB connector on the iPod's gone bust or the PC's USB has...
Is it a IBM/clone or is it a Mac?

Is it in warranty?

Do other USB devices on the PC side work?

9. More details needed
You need to supply a few more details. Are you on a Mac or PC? What operating system and version? Does the iPod play through headphones? If not your problem is probably with the iPod.

Assuming that isn't the case, and if you are using Windows XP, there is probably an icon in your system tray that may or may not look like a memory card with a green arrow above it. If you hove over this icon you will see a tooltip labelled 'Safely remove hardware.' Double-click it and look for USB Mass Storage Device. Select it. Click the Stop button. Reboot.

On reboot, Windows should redetect the USB ports and try to reinstall them. Depending on your motherboard, you may need a special driver disc.

After the USB ports are reinstalled, try hooking up your iPod again and see if Windows will communicate with it now.

If you are on a Mac or your problem is more serious, it would be impossible to help without knowing more.

11. Sounds like...
You just need to reinstall your USB devices. Try 'Add New Hardware' from the control panel and see if Windows can find it.

Like I said, you may need a special driver disc.

If Windows' Add New Hardware wizard isn't able to find it, and you want to post the make and model of your computer I can probably tell you what you need (assuming the maker's website actually has *technical* information on their tech support site and not just regurgitated dumb-ass FAQs.

5. Call Apple
Seriously, I don't understand why people are so hesitant to try a manufacturer's tech support before asking DU
