because it has a very large gay community, but San Francisco probably is the friendliest that I have visited. Portland, Oregon deserves an honorable mention.

7. Maybe SF
Thing is about SF, that even though politicians and businesses are very pro-gay, there were a lot of gay bashings in SF when I was growing up in the Bay Area in the 80's. It used to be (and maybe it still is) a common practice for groups of good 'ole boys from the outskirts of the Bay Area to pile into a truck, drive into SF and "go gay bashing". They would find somebody who looked a little to effeminate for their tastes and bash their heads in. Or they would do it to a gay couple.

Parts of the Bay Area had strains of homophobia when I was growing up. In the early 90's, I can remember one football player from my high school telling me that "all gays should be put into ovens and incinerated". The girl who was elected Homecoming Queen in 1992 had a bumper sticker on her car that said "AIDS kills fags dead". I hear my hometown is much more tolerant than it used to be.

9. Portland, Oregon is definitely up there.
I'd say it's ahead of Seattle, if we're talking simply about being "gay friendly."

19. I agree.
Although if you get out of the city and into Metairie and Louisiana, there are enough fundie types to sharply blunt the good feelings. I'll be moving there one day (it's home to me), and I'll be very careful about where I choose to live..
