Poll question: Best 'Cable Fodder' films of all time?
Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 12:23 AM by WilliamPitt
Those of you who were around to witness the birth of cable TV will remember that, in its infancy, cable TV networks played the same movies over and over and over again. Some were good, some were bad, some were so bad they achieved a degree of sublime greatness that cannot be matched, and some were simply great.

So...

On edit: If you choose an 'Other,' it has to be from the 1980s, the Golden Age of Cable Fodder. All others past 1990 are pretenders.

They had demo tapes of the new jet car prepped and everything. But they couldn't sell it to the networks.

8. They Live 1988
Rowdy Roddy Piper picks up a pair of sunglasses one day and suddenly he can see all the aliens who are posing as humans, and all the propaganda (Obey, Submit) they've hidden within every billboard and broadcast transmission. There are bad sell-out humans, too. Roddy and his buddy team up with other freedom fighters to smash the system. Coooool.

9. Witness
The first evidence that Harrison Ford was going to have a career after Han Solo/Indiana Jones. You can't go wrong with Danny Glover as a bad guy, and Kelly McGillis in cinema's first topless Amish scene. :-) Still a cool movie nearly 20 years on cable, and definitely a staple of the Fodder Era.

Ken Marshall was a hottie in those tight tight pants. And Liam Neeson was pretty damn fine even if he didn't hardly say anything. Yummmmmm.

49. Finding a pic of the Atari game box was the clincher
As I recall, the Atari 5200 was their answer to the George Plimpton "sophistication" of Intellivision, which was our game system of choice when I was a lad.

Some of the HBOs have been replaying Krull recently. I'd never seen it before, and I watched as much as I could stomach -- about up until a very young-looking Liam Neeson was killed off.

Edited on Mon Mar-29-04 11:30 AM by Hardhead
It wasn't the best (by a long stretch), but it was the king of cable fodder. I'd check the HBO listings and they would look like this:

7:00 PM - Beastmaster
9:00 PM - Beastmaster
11:00 PM - Beastmaster
1:00 AM - Beastmaster

Tuesday - All-day Beastmaster Extravaganza!
Wednesday - Just in case you missed it - Beastmaster
Thursday - wait for it...

40. You can be forgiven...
That was my little brother's favorite movie as a kid and we had to watch it EVERY FREAKIN' DAY. I think it was the very first thing anyone in my house ever recorded on the vcr. I'm still trying to forget I ever saw it.

Ok. Ok. I admit it. I thought Marc Singer was a hottie running around with no shirt or pants on back when I was like 12 or 13. But I grew out of it. :)

45. "Ms. 45" (1981) by Abel Ferrera...
http://www.buyindies.com/listings/1/5/FCTS-15909.html
"Abel Ferrara's breakthrough film is a feminist revenge story about a mute garment worker (Zoe Tamerlis) who is raped twice in one day. She arms herself and seeks retribution against the skid-row losers and lower-Manhattan denizens who antagonize her. "Ferrara directs with a wit, flair and pace that belie his low budget, using sleazy locations to evoke everyday violence in the Big Apple" (Time Out). The film is also known as Angel of Vengeance."

60. They Live!
an excellent list

i chose Flash Gordon

Flash's Theme (May):

Flash - Ah - Saviour of the universe
Flash - Ah - He'll save every one of us
Seemingly there is no reason for these
Extraordinary intergalactical upsets (ha ha ha)
What's happening Flash?
Only Dr Hans Zarkov formerly at NASA
Has provided any explanation
Flash - Ah - He's a miracle
This mornings unprecedented solar eclipse Is no cause for alarm
Flash - Ah - King of the impossible
He's for every one of us
Stand for every one of us
He'll save with a mighty hand
Every man every woman every child
He's a mighty
Flash
General Kaka
Flash Gordon approaching
What do you mean
Flash Gordon approaching?
Open fire all weapons
Dispatch war rocket
Ajax to bring back his body
Flash - Ah Gordon's alive
Flash - Ah - He'll save every one of us
Just a man with a man's courage
He knows nothing but a man
But he can never fail
No-one but the pure in heart
May find the golden grail oh oh oh oh
Flash Flash I love you
But we only have fourteen hours to save the Earth
