Two baby canaries have just been BORN in our HOUSE! Miracle of the day!
I'm so excited and emotional and concerned! I'm not sure of my efforts, and would appreciate any advice.

My beautiful birds, Bert and Sassy, now have two babies born today, with two more on the way! I want the best for the babies and their proud parents.

I have a high calcium seed mix available for them.

I have chopped up romain and green leaf lettuce for them.

I have scrambled eggs available for them.

I have fresh water available also.

If anyone has tips on what baby birds and their parents need or a recipe for great baby food or parent food, I'd be ever so grateful. I'll post a picture shortly!

A MIRACLE HAPPENED IN OUR HOUSE TODAY!

6. Hee hee.
Eggs are good protien for birds (and, actually canaries are as closely related to chickens as cows are to humans, so it's not cannibalism, or whatever you call eating your own species' eggs).

little birdies are cool. my finches have been going crazy for the last week. they are building nests all over their cage. the morning dove is sitting on her nest for the third year now- buy another cage and get some birdie vitiams

I'm more used to chicks and ducklings, and even they are small ... but the altricial species are even more fragile-looking. I used to babysit new pigeons through the blind/awkward stage.

I know some folks are grossed by non-fluffy hatchlings, but I remind them that newborn humans look kind of weird too!

12. I dearly loved my canaries
and it always made me so happy when they hatched their ugly little birdlings (and they are ugly, all the altricial birds are born naked and ugly). I used to give mine mealworms when they had little ones, for the extra protein. Make sure they're warm enough, protected from drafts or direct sunlight, and keep the room quiet. Too much fuss can cause the parents to wing the little ones out of the nest.

It sounds like you're doing all the right things. You'll be able to enjoy watching these babies grow and eventually look like real birds. (I know newborn birds look like prehistoric creatures.) Enjoy your birds!

I've bred fish, but never birds. I didn't know you could breed canaries at home-- always heard it was a black art, like orchids.

Are scrambled eggs right? How about the scrunched yolk from hardboiled eggs? Or is that just for tiny fish fry?

Anyway, aside from the cat worrying it to death, I've thought about having canaries again. I still remember one from many years ago who would sing along with the piano. He had an amazing repertoire and range.

16. congratulations...your diet sounds fine
I used to raise baby canaries and I supplied what you're supplying and let the proud parents do the work. I made my egg mix with only the yolk of the a hard-boiled egg and would leave it available for an hour or two before taking it away. The white is not as rich in nutrients. But scrambled eggs are fine, and lots of people do it your way.

I got busy with other things and sold off my canaries a few years back but I really miss them.
