1. I had two hatch last month

Did you know that they are entirely raised by the single mom? The dads are extremely promiscuous and even mate out of species(I read that in the newspaper)

6. Neat, I've never seen a nest.

We feed through the winter and enjoyed a pair outside the kitchen window. We stopped feeding about three weeks ago when blossoms arrived and they scattered, but they will be back when the fifty foot high trumpet vine across the alley starts blooming. Lucky you!

I'll keep my eyes open. Interesting, I was watching and listening to the male hummingbird's mating ritual. He darts up a hundred feet or so, hovers for a few seconds, lets out a high pitched short whistle (almost a loud PEEP), then swoops down faster than lickity-split. The same flight path is repeated 4 or 5 times. I can hear the PEEP from inside the house and know when to go outside to view (like Chance the Gardener, "I like to watch").

Oh, today I saw my friend, the ruby throated hummingbird feeding on the blooming star jasmine in the backyard so they must be nesting in our neighborhood.

Edit: I've identified him as an Anna's hummingbird. My, we learn a lot on DU.

We have Anna's up here on Vancouver Island. I'm particularly impressed by how they overwinter. I guess they manage to get by on bugs and tree sap ...

Saw an abandoned nest last year, made mainly of old man's beard lichens.
