By popular demand: The Thelonious Sphere Monk appreciation thread
Edited on Wed Mar-31-04 10:34 AM by ChavezSpeakstheTruth
My favorite album of his is Brilliant Corners

For a while he was the personal musical trainer of my man Trane.

What a genius!

Oh, BTW - who name's their kid "Sphere"?

1. I will always have a kind spot in my heart for Thelonious...

For his indirect role in making a complete ass out of Tabitha Soren on MTV..

Soren: "So, Mr. Clinton, who is your favorite musical artist?"

Clinton: "Thelonious Monk."

Soren: "Who's The Loneliest Monk?"

Ha ha ha ha ha! Dumbass. You work for a MUSIC channel!

Or some new age Christian rock band.

3. Who names their kid "Sphere"?
I can't think of a more fitting name for, quite possible, the best damned jazz musician EVER than "Thelonius Sphere Monk". It's almost as if his parents KNEW how he would turn out.

My favorite album that he was on is "Mulligan Meets Monk". The blending of two such different styles (Mulligan being West Coast "cool and Monk being... well, "Monk") was just pure brilliance, IMHO.

Every time I listen to Monk play, it's as if every damned note that he plays is out of place and out of tune, when considered individually. But when it's all thrown together, it is completely unique and WONDERFUL.

5. Oh, Cool...you started a new thread.
I love Brilliant Corners. But I'm also partial to Monk's Dream and Thelonious Himself.

Oh, and I wish that I could have the piano playing talent he had in just his two 4th fingers.

I wonder what ever happened to all of his hats.

6. Live At The It Club
I just don't even know what to say about that album. If I could go back in time to any point in history, I'd go back and be at this show. The music is so beautiful there aren't adequate words in the English language to describe it.

9. I have both "It" and "Brilliant Corners"
PLUS...

Monk with Coltrane, Monk with Sonny Rollins, "Thelonius Himself."

My favorite Monk tunes are "Reflections" and "Epistrophy."

Best damn jazz pianist EVER, IMHO.

8. Name a more original songwriter!
Sure there's mingus and Davis and Trane

But Monk's songs became standards!

11. Zamfir: the Master of the Pan Flute
is FAR superior to Monk in EVERY WAY.

I bet he can even play the piano better.
