1. Greetings from NYC!
Logging out soon to conserve battery so I can get an update later. A friend from Florida called to let me know what is going on here.

And just in case anyone missed it, it is HOT AS HELL here.

9. Hi Crewleader!!
While much of New York state is without power at this time, I am in the northern part. We were very lucky here that we still have ours...thank God! My thoughts and prayers go out to my fellow New Yorkers and others who are still in the dark at this hour.

Thanks Crewleader!

10. Thanks for reporting in FarLeftRage
I was up there in the northern part of NY this summer Lake George, NY and I fell in love with the area...such beautiful scenery the lake with the surrounding mountains, breath taking!

That's a good sign the northern New York is OK but those poor folks who are elderly and needy for oxygen to breath at this time of year being hot and humid in NYC.

Now with this happening...I hope Congress gets the message to be involved and not let these power companies be the monopoly, we must have it upgrade and look to the future for solar power other then oil and nuclear power.

Good to see you FarLeftRage..:hi:

:-)

I just hope you all had enough candles and flashlights...seems we don't think about them til we really need them.

Here in Florida with all the thunderstorms we go without power often and now in the hurricane season, I keep those items ready.

Here's hoping it won't be too longer for those without power I'm hearing south Bronx has now power, and others in the city about 1am.

18. Hey!
In upstate new york, we suffered a series of brownouts for approximately two hours, then everything was fine. It was blackout for a tiny amount of time then it came back on. Internet was out for a little while for me, though- which was wierd because my cable TV was working (same company).

19. Checking in
Power came on the upper east side around 9:30am this morning. Don't know about the rest of the city because it's still hard getting thru to people on the phone.

Weird, I was writing a post yesterday about staying in the moment in order to not worry about all the terrorism crap on the TV, and wrote, right now I'm sitting at my PC and everything is fine.

Well, around 4:15 the PC went blank and the power went out in or building in lower Manhattan. Had to walk down 18 flights and the streets were teeming with people. Strangely reminiscent of 9/11 of course without the panic and the distraught knowledge that people were being killed and injured.

So I walked about 100 blocks uptown, took me about 2 and half hours. Very strange last night how dark the city was, people walking on the sidewalks with candles and flashlights.

No one's answering the phone in my office so I assume there's no work today.

Thank God you are OK and your family. I bet it was weird walking the streets last night in the dark.
Hope alot of DUers check in, does Roni live near you?

22. Good morning, gang!!
Power came back to my neck o' the woods around 5 this AM.

Commute was rough getting thru Stamford, but once on I-95 South it was just the usual rush hour traffic, thinning out once over the border into NY. Once out of I-95, everything was smooth, had local police at busiest intersections.

Everything OK at home - I adhere to the Scouts code "Be Prepared", so there were no real problems.

TTUL

23. "jeff in brooklyn"
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 10:10 AM by nostamj
is in brooklyn.

it was a 7 mile walk over the brooklyn bridge and my legs are killing me. (I don't think i've EVER walked 7 miles!)

i was actually able to logon with my battery-backed-up laptop and post when I got home (9:30) but then the PHONES went out. (the water was also out... fun, huh?)

anyway... it was quite a miserable day. i even ran into my evil ex- on my way downtown... first time i've seen him anywhere in 5 years...

I thought it was a sure sign that it was all a very bad dream.

no such luck!

nost

on edit: I got my power back at 8am this morning. phone service was restored at about 10:30

29. NYer99 reporting in.
My neighborhood was without power for 27 hours. It was finally restored at 6:30pm ET yesterday. I had to toss most of the stuff in the refrigerator. I still don't understand why it took so long to restore service. :argh:

30. I'm still out in the 'burbs.
Cliff pushed me around the neighborhood in my wheelchair after dark and we could see so many stars. It would have been amazing to see all those stars from the city, but it was pretty beautiful out here. We enjoyed the blackout very much...tho I was a little worried about my friends at home, and my apartment and my cats....but everything turned out to be ok.

:)
