Now the race is on

Heartaches goin' to the inside

My heart's out of the runnin'
True love's scratched for another's sake
The race is on and it looks like heartaches

7. BIG Possum fan...
...took my dad to see him. When Jones sang "He Stopped Loving Her Today," I could see my dad's hands on the brim of his cowboy hat...which was sitting on his lap...squeezing it as he held back his tears. He really felt that way about my mom...right up to the day he died.

13. Steve's "Even When I'm Blue" (from Copperhead Road)...
...seemed like an homage to the classic Bakersfield twangers like Buck and Merle.

Not on YouTube, unfortunately...except for "cover" versions, and I didn't want to post one of those.

But it has a killer down-tuned twang solo in the middle.

Reminiscent of some of the finer Rosanne Cash, etc. "less pop, more traditional" country stuff. Also the EARLY Linda Ronstadt...the initial Capitol solo albums before Peter Asher turned her into a "hit singles machine." I think a lot of people forget that Ms. Ronstadt once had "teeth."

One thing that gets me every time is a respect for the roots of American music. I also thought the video...with the couple dancing at sunrise/sunset...poignant.

...I've been enjoying Rhino Records' "Heroes of Country Music" lately and Volume 2 ("Legends of Honky Tonk") is probably the twangy-est.

The tracks were recorded between 1936 and 1966. Spade's not on it, but when you hunt down some of the older tracks in YouTube, he shows up in many of the "related searches."

41. My favorite Edmunds track...
...is his cover of Chuck Berry's "Let It Rock," probably the best out of the many versions I've heard. Listen for the second solo at the 1:30 mark...the only word that can accurately describe it is dangerous. He pulls off a total of three solos...and the track is less than three minutes long. It's a live track, with Rockpile, from his "Subtle As A Flying Mallet" album. On the majority of the other tracks (all but two) he plays all of the instruments.

63. Strait, yes, but not being a Garth Brooks fan, it's a tough call...
...I see Brooks dangerously close to the line between "traditional country" and "comedy."

Buck Owens could pull that kind of stuff off ("Act Naturally," "Tiger By The Tail"), but Brooks' vibe just rockets right past me. It's a matter of taste, I never really gave it much thought...I just don;t care for his style.

71. Hey, that's pretty cool! Obviously I come at my twangy stuff via my love for
celtic music. I have branched out into bluegrass and Americana over time.

I know she doesn't have that big booming voice like the men, but it's still an awesome song. :D

74. Heard that one just the other day...
...I love a lot of his stuff but what I'd classify as the "melodramatic twang" of "Still Doin' Time" is at the top of my list:

76. I LOVE Emmylou...
Edited on Mon May-09-11 10:50 PM by Amerigo Vespucci
...I saw her as the opening act for Willie Nelson on her "Elite Hotel" (second album) tour.

It was at the legendary Circle Star Theater in San Carlos CA (long-since bulldozed, a high-rise office complex stands on the spot).

Circle Star had a revolving stage. Emmylou hated it...at one point she said to the audience "You guys should be revolving, not me."

:-)

I had front row seats, which means I was six feet away from her. She was with the first version of her "Hot Band" which included legendary Ricky Nelson / Elvis guitarist James Burton.

Words can't even express how beautiful she looked that night (she has what I believe is referred to as "striking, natural beauty") and she had the same pure, powerful voice that was heard on her albums.

Joan Baez was a surprise "walk-on" guest and sang a couple of songs with her as well.

I also didn't know Willie played 3-hour shows. He also did "medleys" of his songs Grateful Dead-style...he'd play six whole songs in a row, with instrumental interludes connecting them, and no break in between.

90. Raul Malo's 2010 solo album got pretty good reviews...
...I don't really know enough about The Mavericks to know how his solo stuff stacks up in comparison, but...

http://www.amazon.com/Sinners-Saints-Raul-Malo/dp/B003O7MI60/

In a departure from his past albums, Malo took his tracks from his home studio in Nashville to Austin, where an incredible musical cross-pollination took place. Malo has spent much time playing in Texas with the Lone Star State's wealth of legendary musicians. He entered longtime friend Ray Benson's Bismeaux Studios and finished the album with the help of Sir Douglas Quintet and Texas Tornado veteran Augie Meyers on the Vox Continental organ and, on the song "Superstar," guitarist Shawn Sahm, Sir Douglas' son. The Trishas (Savannah Welch, Kelley Mickwee, Liz Foster and Jamie Wilson) provided background vocals. And hotshot accordionist Michael Guerra, known for his work with the Tex-Mex Experience, lent further Tejas authenticity to the sound.

The title track opens the record, setting the album's tone thematically and musically. From his boyhood and through his years of coming of age in Miami, Malo spent many nights in neighborhood music rooms listening to local artists perform their Flamenco zarzuelas. Malo wrote "Sinners & Saints" by conjuring up those nights in his head, and playing his electric guitar with a cross between Flamenco melodicism and retro surf-twang. "It has no chorus, no repeatable line," he says, "And it's long. Purposefully long."

The second track, "Living for Today," ventures into socio-political territory against an upbeat sound that includes chiming guitars, Meyers' Vox organ and the Trishas' backing vocals. In a musical space that includes the biting observations of Rodney Crowell, James McMurtry or Todd Snider, this song is a welcome addition. Speaking of Crowell, Malo provides a heart-felt reading of his modern-day standard "Til I Gain Control Again."

The disc's other songs are also full of special moments. In Austin Malo recorded an original song called "Superstar" with several pals from the Texas Tornados. That and several other tracks feature Guerra's blazing Tex-Mex accordion, as in "San Antonio Baby." In a more serious vein, Malo delivers the classic Spanish song "Sombras" in the stunning tenor voice that made him famous. He also offers an innovative cover of Los Lobos' "Saint Behind the Glass," whose rich mix of percussion, guitars and Mexican instruments will leave audiophiles deeply absorbed. The cryptic lyrics offer an unexpected finale to the album.

83. And Kitty Wells, the Queen of Twang - It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mgOK8oaQu4I

Many moons ago, believe it or not, i was in a country duo, and we did all the songs I posted here in honky tonks back when we did covers. We were actually pretty hard core rockers, and had a working rock band also, but we made pretty good money makin' the cowboys cry in their beer on the weeknights.

Q: what do you call a rock musician that plays country?

A: Employed
