MFM medical updates thread
I wasn't sure if I should put this in one of the other threads or start a new one, but maybe this can just be an info thread and all the funnies and good wishes can go in one of the others??? You guys decide.

Anyway not much news yet but he IS out of surgery. I was to be connected to his nurse but she must have been busy in with him and didn't pick up. Got routed back to desk and they told me to try again in about an hour. So it sounds like things are on schedule and went well.

Either I will try or maybe CaPeggy will get through then (I might have to run an errand but will be back soon)

1. Thanks, Kali!
It's a relief to know he got through the surgery and is in ICU.

One way or the other, one of us will talk to his nurse!

10. **I just spoke with a nurse**
He wasn't MFM's nurse, but he knew what's going on...

MFM is still intubated, which is to be expected. (The tube down into the lungs for breathing)

And he is sedated, but is responsive to verbal stimuli.

The nurse said MFM will come off the breathing machine tomorrow, and will be gotten out of bed and so on.

And I gave a message on our behalf to be told to MFM when he does wake up more. And that was that we're all pulling for him and hoping he's feeling a lot better.

I think a lot of us are so concerned. It's a huge deal what MFM went through, although he has such a sense of humor about it all, it's a serious procedure and, well . . . it's something to worry over.

CaPeggy and Kali, thanks so very much for keeping us all up to speed on MFM. He's a special guy, and I appreciate the news. I know a lot of folks do.

If I were his nurse, I'd consider myself fortunate. Patients like him are one in a million. :)

29. ****TUESDAY MORNING UPDATES*****
I just talked to his nurse - he is in the bathroom!!! How perfect is that??? Seriously, his breathing tube is out, he had actual food-like substance for breakfast and he is up moving around. She said he is in some pain and I said be sure to give him MORE drugs and that somebody would call in about 30 minutes to actually talk to him...Peggy are you around? I, of course, have to go do something so if you see this try at about 10:30, or a quarter till...

wow, getting up to go to the bathroom - I am amazed! I think I would need to lay around for a few days and use pans or diapers and I'm a tough old broadd!

31. Very Good news!
My mom had her heart valves replaced almost 20 years ago, and it was a few days before she was moving around. She has told us that even with the pain of having undergone heart surgery she felt better (from the new valves) as soon as she came to.

Here are my best wishes to MFM and a speedy and thorough recovery.

32. It sounds like MFM's get-up-and-go that he was feeling had got-up-and-left
is returning with as much gusto as he can muster! That's wonderful- the docs and nurses like to see people move around, as long as he can rest between all the prodding and poking that happens in hospitals.

Wishing continued getting-well-quick to MFM, with quality sleep to assist in the process.

Thanks for the updates, Peg and Kali!

35. ***Tuesday Noon Update***
I got to speak to MFM himself, live and in person!

We talked for over 15 minutes, and he sounds absolutely great! He is sore, but doing very well. He has a tiny incision in his breastbone (sternum) through which they did the surgery. He's already been up out of bed, into the bathroom (he HATES bedpans) and is happy about that.

He misses all of you. I told him about the other threads, and he was happy to hear that.

He told me a great funny story, from years ago. He had (I think) hernia surgery, and was shaved from chest to groin. When he got home (he was still married at the time), his wife said "drop 'em." and he did. She burst out laughing and said he looked like the best-endowed three year old she'd ever seen! He told me that if I didn't tell the story, he would, so I do have permission!

He was similarly shaved this time...

He did lose his beard and moustache, but those will grow back.

It was so good to hear him laugh!

:D

Great to hear he's up and about. When he said they were "opening him up anyway" I thought he meant the old 'rib-spreading' type. I love how they can do so many surgeries now without the huge holes in you afterward. Makes recuperation that much better, too :)

47. ***TUESDAY EVENING UPDATE***
I just got off the phone with MFM. He was in pretty good spirits and laughed at a few things, had is catheter out and has a few hours to "produce" or the hard one goes back in (all men shudder here). He MAY be moved out of ICU as early as tonight! More likely tomorrow. (I'm still in shock at how fast this is going! I expected him to be practically unconscious for 3 or 4 days.)

He is enjoying grapes and watermelon for some moisture and his nurse sounds like a real sweetheart. When I talked to her this morning I asked if he was cracking jokes yet, because that is how I could gauge his status from far away and she laughed and said yes. I said that was fantastic, just to tell him to shut up if she got tired of it, but that it was the best way to tell how he was doing.

I'm so glad he is doing so well. I knew he would be OK but one worries anyway.

So the news continues to be very good.

I suspect he'll get moved tomorrow. Like you, I thought he'd be in a coma for several days. Or something! He must be constructed of very sturdy stuff to be doing this well, this fast.

Thanks for the update.

Out of ICU is excellent news, and yeah, fast. Shows what a great spirit MFM has, to get goin on recovery so quickly. Well, he's gotta, his humor is needed here.

Yeah, I hear ya about worrying, it's what we do. I knew he'd be okay too, but . . . yeah, we always worry. Thanks again for updates!

For the lounge: tell them I've had TWO tag team sponge baths, and I was real tired after (let them wonder about that)

He had a little set-back today, not unexpected but it delayed his move to a regular ward/room until this evening, but he did get moved (and has a view of the Catalina Mountains now) and is almost completely de-tubed now - unrestricted food and liquids and they will be getting him up and moving more tomorrow.

He said he misses you guys and he is looking forward to getting back to the lounge.

75. ***Thursday Morning Update***
Just finished a great conversation with our own MFM...He's continuing to do well, feeling well and eating and all that!

The various drain and monitoring tubes are coming out. He hopes to see them all gone sometime today!

He's going to be walking more now, and he's looking forward to that as well...

His heart is working well, in a good solid normal rhythm.

He sounds good.

76. Ah, excellent news!!
I read the menu at that resort where he is presently vacationing, and I think I may spring for a few thousand bucks just to taste that "hospital" food. I don't need a heart valve replaced or anything like THAT, but of course if that's the price of admission, I would consider it, cause that menu sounds awesome.

Glad the tubes are being yanked, as well. As long as the sponge baths don't stop, the poor man has been through so much, he NEEDS his sponge baths!! :)

Best news, about the good solid heart rhythm. That's what it takes. Thanks so much for the updates!!

91. ***RAPTURE EVE UPDATE***
Just got through to MFM (sorry Peggy, I must have written the wrong numbers down) after trying again and getting some odd person in a spare computer cubicle somewhere.:o

I may win the pool (or somebody take Sunday!) - he's going to rehab this afternoon! He told me not to tell you what kind of rehab, but he's going to be traveling partway across town and stay for a day or two there then they are going to release his ass! (probably the rest of him too)

And with all the ass comments in AV's thread, that should be about right! So get your monitors ready he could be back on line as early as Monday or Tuesday!

:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Oh he says to say hi and he really misses all of you. I think he wanted me to say something about tag team sponge baths too but I may be confused now. You KNOW he will be posting about THAT!

No worries about the numbers...I did wander in voicemail limbo for a few minutes yesterday till I got smart and punched an extension I figured would get me a human (it did!) who then sent me to the correct place!

So he's in rehab today? Wow!

So he might be home Monday? Wow again!

I'm glad, really glad, that he's doing so well...

Hope he didn't lose my number, otherwise we are all going to have to wait until he gets home and on line again!

108. Hmmmm, strange
If there aren't too many rehab places in his area, maybe it would work to call the ones likely to have taken in the troublemaker and just ask if he is a resident there. It's not asking for medical info, just about his presence. When I worked in a hospital, we were allowed to say if someone was admitted or not but certainly not for what reason, etc.

He'll be in touch sooner or later, but of course we'd all like "sooner".

but I suspect he will be home Monday. Tucson is CHOCK FULL of nursing facilities and places like that so trying to find one would probably take longer than I want to spend on the phone! I mean of course I would if I thought he was really missing and wouldn't be getting home soon - hell I WOULD file a missing person report (hee hee) if that were the case, but I think this will be resolved in another day or so...

116. I finally pirated some access tonight and your good wishes and concerns...
.
.
.
...and asshattery and updates have been truly humbling and so overwhelming that
you've brought out pretty much the entire emotional gamut from me tonight.
.
.
.
I laughed.
.
.
.
I cried (I really did).
.
.
.
.
.
I wet the bed.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
.
In other words, you folks pretty much caused me to re-live my wedding night.
.
.
.
.
.
Still hurts... especially when I'm working to get my independence back -- but, you know what they say.
.
.
.
"We have the technology. We can rebuild him."
.
.
.
.
"We have the drugs. We can get him really, really fucked-up."
.
.
.
.
.
And they do.
.
.
.
.
.
And they are.
.
.
.
.
.
Sorry I got lost today. Will call Kali with new update and number for her and CaliforniaPeggy.
.
.
.
Physical rehab hospital. Pretty nice place. Nice digs. NIce food. Nice staff -- impressive.
.
.
.
The nurses DO all know who I am. "Oh, GEEZZZ... look what's peek-a-booing around the corner again!!!"
.
.
.
.
.
"Nurses... oh, N-U-R-R-R-R-R-S-E-S!!!!! Guess what I can't find again!!!!"
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

.
.
.
.
.
.
.
I've actually been VERY good. All "good" patients got free beer at the Saturday Night Kegger here.
.
.
But that's all gonna change now.
.
.
You know how I like to get a little freak on?
.
.
.
Now, the baddest patient gets treated to TRIPLE Tagteam Midget Wrestler Bedbath Wednesday Night.
.
.
.
Wednesday night, I plan on getting all THREE of my little freaks on!!!
.
.
.
.
.
They're talking (so far) about an evaluation Wednesday and MAYBE home -- but may keep me longer.
.
.
.
.
.
And, oh yeah.
.
.
.
.
.
STILL... no one has convinced me that I'm not fucking immortal!!!.
.
.
.
.
.
The system I'm on has some SERIOUS pic download restrictions that took me forever to beat to
get just this ONE picture on.
.
.
.
I'll have more to say and tell and  show when I don't feel so good/bad.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Thank you.
.
.
I do miss you all.

.
.

Good night.

Yay, another phone call with MFM!

He sounds really good, laughing and talking!

He feels pretty good, though still quite sore from the surgery. No surprise there!

He's getting around well and loving it!

He discovered that there's a computer available to him (though not in his room) and so he walks out to where it is. Apparently nobody else uses it.

We will be hearing from him some more!

He has no idea when he's going home yet, and he's in no hurry. And needless to say, he's really glad to be hearing from all of us!
