Who lives in Vermont? Husband and I are talking about moving.
If we move, it won't be for some time, but we continue to open ourselves to the possibility that we do not have to stay in this area just because his family is here and we have a mortgage here. Last night we were talking about Vermont. I've only been camping there and haven't spent much time.

I'd love to hear impressions from anyone who lives there or has spent time there, any part.

We're just kind of dreaming and brainstorming right now.

He's a musician and can work as an audio-visual professional. I'm a not-for-profit fundraising executive with a pretty decent resume. We have a school-age child.

We like to garden, see movies and hike. We have a pretty modest lifestyle. We don't have a lot of money.

We chose our current neighborhood on Long Island because of proximity to his family, and economic, ethnic and religious diversity.

Who thinks there will be a big population boom because of health care? Maybe they'll close the borders. ;-)

2. I love Vermont -- I would live there in a heartbeat.
I grew up in upstate NY about an hour and a half from Burlington, Vermont. One of my good friends from high school lives there and absolutely loves it. I would live there if I could.

3. They have the best political representation in the US...
Everyone I know who lives there is either
crazy rich, or works for someone who is
crazy rich.

I don't think the cost of living is low....

Beautiful state.

13. I saw some cheap properties.
I would have to learn to drive, it seems. Although I've always said I would never have to drive. I've lived all over and been just fine. But it may be hard to get hired out there as a non-driver.

4. Grew up a stone's throw away, still there a lot.
Get your jobs/ finances together before you make the big plunge. You will find LOTS of like minded people - and your particular career fields oversubscribed! Shop your resumes around to the colleges - lots of them in VT.
Think of it like Hollywood - Most folks have jobs/businesses, but they are REALLY big-game hunters, musicans, racers, authours, firemen, filmmakers....

14. I would job search before moving.
I've had head hunters ask me to move out of state before so I could probably find someone willing to commit to me before we buy property. It would be great to live in a college town.

Traffic sucks in summer, and roads are a bitch in winter. But it is pretty.

27. I figured.
I've lived in areas with no public transportation before, but it does make it harder. I really want to avoid driving. I am not meant to drive.

29. It's a very rural state.
It can't support much of a public transportation infrastructure with such a small population. You will want to live in town, and within walking distance of stores. That will also be the expensive real estate on flat ground. I'm not trying to discourage you, but you should be realistic, given you're lack of experience. Driving in northern New England in winter is not easy, and you should be prepared for it.

30. My husband and I were talking about it this morning.
I have very bad night vision and am very nervous about driving anyway. We don't think it would be safe for me to drive. When I lived in rural Arizona, I walked, rode my bike or took car service. There's no winter there. I could walk and ride my bike year-round.

Everyone said I would have to learn to drive on Long Island, but we actually live just off a very good bus route. I do take car service sometimes. (If you add it all up, it's cheaper than buying and maintaining a car and paying for insurance.)

Vermont isn't really looking viable. But it's just so attractive.

6. I lived four years there in college in the '70s
Absolutely lovely place, but jobs are truly hard to come by. I would really think twice before showing up without a solid job offer.

8. I live near there....
It's a great place if you can stand the winters.

Southern Vt. from Bennington to the NH border are close enough to Massachusetts and (in Bennington area) the Capital District of New York that you mi8ght be able to find work there if you're willing to drive a little bit.

...and I prefer not to drive at all. This might be what crosses Vermont off our list.

I love winter and my husband loves to drive. He can drive me around and I can keep him warm.

Edited on Fri May-20-11 09:48 PM by Armstead
It gets colder than the floogies, and more snowcthan one would want to think about some years.

I hate winter, and for four months a Year I wonder what I'm doing in this part of the works....But summer and fall make up for it.

With her sweet husband and three lovely little girls. She's a very sophisticated young woman, has lived in several places in the world, and really is very happy and settled in Vermont.
I would love to live in Bernie Sanders' state.

10. take a look at our community
we are a lovely arts community in southwestern VT. Our small school is second to none...heading towards going "independent with public mission" to save our community vitality.

22. Actually, yes
we will be looking for a development director for our new school to open fall 2012. However, there are a lot of possible opportunities in the area for such work.
Around here, you raise your salary as part of the job.
We are certainly fond of our area. I am the Chair of our Village Trustees and would be happy to talk sometime as your dreams become reality.

We don't really know what we're doing. We're just opening our minds to possibilities.

That's exciting about your school.

23. I lived in Bennington while in nursing school at the hospital in the '70s
Edited on Fri May-20-11 09:01 PM by marzipanni
Sooo long ago... heh.
One weekend a few of us nursing students decided to leave the dorm (they had one then) and spend a night at the Waloomsac Inn. It was only in slightly better condition than it seems to be in these photos. We thought it would be spooky but it wasn't.

I love that old place, I wish the owners could keep it from falling apart. (Oh- I just found a preservation website for it!)

Ended up renting a little flat in an old farm house on Rte. 7 with one of the other students. I have fond memories of living in the area.
