Internet Explorer 7? or IE 8?
anyone here use IE 8 - thinking of taking the next step up.. I have vista.

I'm scared to go to a browser I am not familiar with although I know a lot of you swear by other browsers.

what happens it I totally switch - like to chrome or something? or can I even do that?

1. You can actually have multiple browsers
on the 'puter. I have Firefox as well as IE, and also had Chrome on my old PC. It's a crapshoot. I persoanlly like IE, and I have no problem with the interface. Those who have always used one of the other browsers usually stick with the one they have used.

Sometimes, IE goes awry, but it's still worth the trouble to me, because I can get around pretty quickly without trying to find some command or icon to load something. I have the Google toolbar and can access almost everything I need through that.

IE is actually up to IE9 now, but I am fine with IE8. Not a huge difference (IMHO) between 7 and 8.

2. If you MUST use IE...
And you don't, Firefox, Chrome, Opera, and Safari (largely Apple users, though Safari is available for Windows if I'm not mistaken) are the browsers of choice. You can load any/all of these along with IE (and each other) on the same box with no real issues. Me, I generally put my choice behind Firefox for the add-on support (script blockers and the like).

However, if you need IE for something (if you are running XP, you'll need it for Windows/Microsoft update, which needs the elevated privileges of ActiveX controls to examine your system) go with IE8, it is much more W3C compliant than the previous versions and features an IE7 compatibility mode for sites developed for optimal display on the IE7 browser.

However, I would strongly suggest looking into and trying out some of the other browsers, all browsers are generally the same in form and function, but others are offering better security either built in to the browser or available as add-ons.

4. I'd like to add one more thing to ElboRuum's comments...
...hackers love to write "exploits" (things like "drive-by" installation of malicious software or programs..."malware"...and viruses, trojans, etc) specifically for I.E.

It's true...the other browsers are by no means immune, but it's like I.E. has a bulls-eye painted on its back.

Safari does have a Windows version, but it's never won me over. It can be sluggish at times. I use Firefox as my primary browser but also like Opera. Google Chrome has a bit of catch-up to do, in my opinion, but it's another worthwhile option.

What matters is what you like, so try them all...they're all free and they each offer very different perks and options.

5. If you're familiar with IE 7 then switching to another browser is easy.
That's because Microsoft has pretty much just copied what everyone else is doing. However, with browsers like Opera, Firefox and Chrome, you'll find their ability to be easily customized far superior to anything Microsoft offers at this time.

I'm one of the very few around here that swears by Opera and nothing else, unless I absolutely have to use IE (that only happens when a site is either completely backward in their coding or has screwed something up in it and only IE can handle it... sometimes ;))

The two browsers that are the most secure are Opera and Firefox, with Opera just barely edging out Firefox in that category :)

And IE. Why should I use something else when it all works fine from the store?

10. I'm being sarcastic ...
when people post a PC question, someone always posts a "Get A Mac" reply. Beating them to the punch.

11. I did the update to IE9 and now I'm using Firefox!
IE never quite worked right on my system anyway.

There are a couple things I don't like about Firefox, but it rarely crashes or gets buggy so I can live with the minor stuff.
