3. Good, via cable modem.
Got a new wireless router that's fast enough for anything except maybe high def. Any problem like that could be resolved by running CAT5, methinks.

2. I probably don't know enough about Hulu
but doesn't Hulu just have 5 minute clips? If you're referring to Netflix Instant, they don't have everything but they got full episodes and movies.

4. Hulu has full episodes too.
What I'm wondering is which one is the best replacement for my expensive cable TV service.

8. Nope, full TV series and films
Especially valuable is The Criteron Film Series - classic films, particularly foreign

Are you asking for a recommendation, the pros and cons?

10. Yes, please.
Would either be a reasonable alternative for cable TV service?

18. OK, my take.
Netflix: Huge selection (from the best in show, both films and TV, to WTF stinkers) of DVDs to rent. At any time I'd say about 10 to 15% of them are streamed. The streamed selection charges constantly. $10 gives 1 DVD per month plus unlimited streaming. No ads! Downside - Often takes a long time for new films and TV shows to be available, very limited closed captioning for streamed selections, DVD queue gets screwed up, sometimes won't get the DVDs in order. Overall: If you're interested in streaming a wide selection of films and some TV shows, Netflix is a good choice.

Hulu: Nowhere near the Netflix film selection, however, Hulu has a lot of TV shows. Films: The good (great in some cases), the bad and the butt ugly. If you want to keep with current TV series, Hulu's the one. But, Hulu runs ads with the TV shows, lots of ads.

So, if you're unplugging the cable, sign up for both. For less than $20 a month a good deal.

24. Very useful.
One thing that concerns me is, life would have no meaning without WVU football. Maybe there's a happy medium. Maybe I could retain quasi-basic cable, dumping all that expensive HBO, etc crap in favor of Netflix/Hulu. That seems a good idea if it wouldn't be complicated to use.

26. I know from nothing about the Roku box (content with present situation),
but that sounds like a solution to WVU viewing.

6. I have both. For a reason.
I don't have cable and was about to get rid of Hulu plus when they added The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. 7.99 a month is reasonable for that and also in case I miss an episode of Modern Family

Netflix is an outstanding value particularly if you have a device to stream to your television.

11. So basic Hulu is free and Hulu Plus is $7.99 a month?
Is that right?

14. Right, but at the present I am content
with the Hulu shows that are free. There are many movies I click on that require a Hulu Plus membership, but I pass on them. One day, if there is a movie that I just must see, then I will pay the $7.99. But for the time being I am a cheapskate.

16. So a side-by-side comparison should be between Netflix & Hulu Plus.
Does that seem logical?

20. Daily show and Colbert free on Comedy Central the next day re-run. So is Rachel.
and most other news on MSNBC.com.

I found since cutting tv I have not missed out on anything.
I don't mind watching Daily show etc the next day, I get live news streams online, I don't watch sports, and Netflix sends me 3-5 movies a week. In fact, I watch MORE now than I did on tv.
Most tv channels have online streaming of their shows at some point.

Had it for almost 2 years. It's great. I watch a ton of movies. Mostly streaming, but we get movies through the mail too.

12. Netflix. Better selection and not partially owned by News Corp.
From Wikipedia:

Hulu is a joint venture of NBCUniversal (Comcast/General Electric), Fox Entertainment Group (News Corp) and Disney-ABC Television Group (The Walt Disney Company)

13. Pay the $10 or so for Netflix, the instant streaming is great.
It is so worth it, then use the free Hulu.

What's the downside? What's the upside, if any, besides cost?

19. I know you didn't ask me

but the big downsides (speaking from a Netflix point-of-view) were no sports. I feel that part of it especially now when the NBA conference finals are on TNT & ESPN. If you don't like sports then this is a non-issue.

The other is if you really like a show that is still on the air(like you watched seasons 1-5 but season 6 is currently being aired on cable) you either have to wait for it to come to DVD or Instant and sometimes this can take a really long time.

Those are really my only downsides when it comes to not having cable.

21. If I might suggest a roku box
If you go with netflix, love it btw, then check out the roku box for hooking up your tv. The device has a butt load of free channels and several paid more added all the time. I use it wireless, we have a cable modem and the picture is great.
http://www.roku.com/roku-channel-store

Hulu plus has a free week trial I gave it a shot but since I have cable it really did not get me anything. You might try an inexpensive amplified indoor antenna for local programs. I disconnected one cable box a few months back and got this
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882125344&cm_re=indoor_antenna_rca-_-82-125-344-_-Product
I am able to watch all the local networks with very nice reception. Now one thing is that I live in NYC so over the air comes in nice, what you get it will depend on location.

hope that helps

27. Now that's interesting.
Roku looks like it could provide a setup that's relatively simple to use.

I doubt if i could pick up local channels with an indoor antenna though< as I live way out in the boonies.
