they can free up a real person to talk to me.

Sorry, but until you call me with a real person, I'm hanging up! You're call just isn't that important to me!

1. haha, you sure you didn't just hang up on the president?
Don't they usually have a secretary call and say "Please hold for the President." Or something?

On a serious note, yeah, that is pretty rude and I'd hang up on them too.

3. If it isn't important enough for the president to call himself, I think I'm safe hanging up.

4. I sadly do that to people all the time at work.
Part of my job is to make the outgoing phone calls to bank clients (because the connect-rate during 9-5 is so low) then forward the call to the "caller", that way the managers, Bus. Bankers, FSRs and FAs don't have to waste time making outgoing phone calls. Better still, most of our clients are native speakers of Spanish and I am not, so half the time I have to put them on hold without explaining that I'm putting them on hold and if they hang up I'm expected to re-call.

5. Do you at least attempt to identify yourself, as in " this is the ABC bank calling"?
I have no idea who is placing these calls.

7. Oh Yes.
"Hi, This is ...from ABC Bank, please hold for...your friendly ABC ____________. She/He would like to talk about your accounts and how we can best serve you. Thank you for banking with ABC."

If they're not IDing themselves prior to human connect, that's possibly collections or creditors. They try to avoid ID prior to connection because they don't want you avoiding them. You're less likely to hang-up if they don't say "collections. Please hold for our collections reps." and you're an idiot, because you hold out hope it's Ed McMahon with the PCH sweepstakes.

Me? I hang up on people if they don't ID themselves in the first 3 seconds.

12. Does it sound like a recorded message that tells you to wait?

13. That's it exactly. A machine calls me and tells me to wait until a person is free!

14. That is commonly done by collection agencies.
If that's the case, you can Google the number and usually find out. I helped get a friend a phone about 7 years ago, he had it for a while and never paid his last bill. I am still getting calls and letters for the $90. It hasn't affected my credit to where I can't get a house, car or cards so I'm not worried about it.

8. Did they call you back?
I always hang up when I get those. I'm not going to hang out on the phone while you find and employee to talk to me about something I didn't ask for anyway.

Apparently they can see which numbers answered and hung up, and I had one call back once. The guy wanted to know WHY I just hung up, instead of just waiting for someone to come onto the line.

Instead of answering, I just hung up on him. I didn't ask to be berated about my telephone habits either :)

11. For awhile I was getting a weekly robocall that said "This is your Doctor's
laboratory calling with an important message..."

I hung up immediately.

Our BC plan was playing games with paying the lab charges on my annual
physical--hubby had called BC three times and they always said they were
paying it--so finally hubby called (he's the insured) BC and talked
not to a clerk or a supervisor but the next level up. Bill finally
was paid and I haven't had a robocall from the lab now for several weeks.

I'm with you. My phone is for my use and necessity. I see no reason
to 'hold' for an automaton. You wanna' talk to me? Call me IN PERSON.
