Sherlock named Best Drama Series
Elementary, my dear Bafta. On an evening when the gongs were spread around well, the big winner was BBC One’s stylishly updated Sherlock, which won both Best Drama Series and Best Supporting Actor for Martin Freeman, who plays Dr Watson.
It seemed somehow fitting on the birthday of the character’s creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. They’ll be dancing in the streets of Baker tonight.
The show’s star Benedict Cumberbatch, however, lost out on Best Actor to young comedian Daniel Rigby, who turned in an uncanny Eric Morecambe impersonation for BBC Four’s Eric And Ernie.
With Best Actress going to Vicky McClure for This Is England 86, it was refreshing to see breakthrough talent rewarded. These two were joined by Lauren Socha, who won Best Supporting Actress for her foul-mouthed, mind-reading chavette in ASBO superhero drama Misfits.
The ceremony that puts the “t” in Bafta was broadcast on an hour’s delay from London’s Grosvenor House and characterised by winners who seemed genuinely surprised – not to mention unprepared speech-wise.

6. I loved Downton and Sherlock too..
Perhaps Sherlock won because it had a broader audience (male and female) whereas I think Downton would be favored by women only? Just a thought.

I can't wait for the next series of both of them.

8. I made my SO watch it, and he fell in love
Actually would set up the TV for PBS on Sunday nights when Downton Abby was on.

But he did NOT want to watch what he thought would be a "girly" show. What a shame.

5. How does this to the Jeremy Bret series, who was, i think,
the best Sherlock Holmes ever.

10. I don't know if it's better
but is a very well written and acted modernization...And they amped up Sherlock's autistic/aspie personality quirks which make him right at home in the 21st century...

11. Apples and oranges
Brett was the classic Victorian Holmes and it'll be long time, if ever, before anyone does as well with that interpretation. Harkwick was, of course, the perfect Victorian gentleman professional.

Cumberbatch does an impressive modern Holmes, younger, not as polished, more self aware, but neurotic.

Martin's award is deserved. His Watson is gritter and I think more believable. He has a good reason to tolerate, even enjoy, Holmes' shenanigans.

The writing is brilliant. It keeps the essential stories and characterizations, but molds them in modern terms. The Baker Street Irregulars are now homeless street people. Holmes deals with a 'three patch problem' ("Impossible to maintain a smoking habit in London nowadays") instead a three pipe problem. Cells have replaced the telegram. Touches like these remember the original, but aren't enslaved to it.

I'm eager for more episodes.

12. Snub!
Downton Abbey, nominated in three categories but winning none, can consider itself unjustly snubbed – as can Miranda and Doctor Who.
