As a fundraiser, I often ask supporters for advice when it is not yet appropriate to ask for a gift or to do something specific. Asking for advice invests them in the success of the organization, and they often end up giving a gift or doing work to make sure we succeed. They want their advice to work, so they do other things to make sure it works. And, they also sometimes have really good advice.
In my personal life, I almost never ask for advice. I usually ask for empathy. That's because I usually know what I should do, I'm just having a hard time doing it. Feeling the general support of my family and friends often helps me let go of the fear, shame, guilt, and other bad feelings that are blocking me from doing what I need to do.
If I ever don't actually know what to do, I actually do have many mentors. I ask them for advice when I'm ready to take it.
