How can someone on twitter have hundreds of followers, but never made a tweet?

How can someone on twitter have hundreds of followers, but never made a tweet?
My twitter account (no, I won't disclose what it is) has gotten followed today by at least 8 people. Weird. I only have 30 or so legitimate followers.

4 or 5 of them have been people whose tweets were all links to debt consolidation shit.

the others were folks who have no identification of who they are, except maybe a name, and had hundreds of followers, were following in the realm of 1500 or more others, and NEVER MADE A TWEET.

Was there some kind of massive inbred debt-consolidation thingy that got started today, like, "Hey - you 2000 people, all follow one another, find other people at random to follow, and you'll make bajillions!"

Seriously, WTF. :wtf:

5. Sorry - maybe some day I'll make a rabrrrrrr twitter account
but my fear is that I would at some point send a tweet in my raging rabrrrrrrness, but forget that I was currently logged in with my professional account and alienate half my clients.

11. A lot of people join twitter to read others tweets or to follow other people

not because they necessarily have anything to say themselves. There are times where I don't tweet anything because I'm too entertained by reading other peoples tweets.
Edit: also some people that have followers because people may think they are an actual celebrity when they aren't. Fake accounts can collect lots of followers in a short time.

13. When your account gets a new follower it will appear to others who are following
your followers as something like, "others that are similar to you" with an option to follow. So you are probably showing up on other followers lists and their followers are getting the option to follow you now.
