Pet Peeve..."God Bless America" at the 7th inning stretch...
I HATE it when they sing it instead of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame. It's a ballgame not a church service...

"Take Me Out to the Ballgame" should be a requirement!!!

2. Haven't you heard? 9/11 changed everything
Including apparently the seventh inning stretch but only on TV or only when the Yankees play on TV. But at my local AA affiliate it is still "Take me out to the Ballgame".

Of course if the Yankees are playing or the game is on TV we have to show American how god-fearing patriotic we are by singing that stupid song during the seventh inning stretch. I've heard that in Yankee Stadium at least, they don't let you go to the bathroom during it either, which is usually how I escape having to stand for the anthem at the beginning of games. I hide out somewhere until they are done with that inanity.

3. In Baltimore, at the old Memorial Stadium, they played "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" during the 7IS
I think they should just do away with the singing and have more dot racing.

6. I'm with you, Fudd!
:banghead: That burns me up. AAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!

Our local minor league team (unaffiliated), the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, thankfully does not do that. I don't know if the Orioles do, but I'll find out next weekend when we go to two games vs the Halos. O8)

7. They're getting "The Church of Baseball" all wrong...
Bull Durham
written by Ron Shelton

Annie:
I believe in the church of baseball. I've tried all the major religions and most of the minor ones. I've worshipped Buddha, Allah, Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, trees, mushrooms, and Isadora Duncan. I know things. For instance, there's 108 beads in a Catholic rosary and there's 108 stitches in a baseball. When I learned that, I gave Jesus a chance. (she sighs) But it just didn't work out between us. The Lord laid too much guilt on me. I prefer metaphysics to theology. Y'see, there's no guilt in baseball, and it's never boring. (she giggles) Which makes it like sex. There's never been a ballplayer slept with me who didn't have the best year of his career. Making love is like hitting a baseball. You just gotta relax and concentrate. Besides, I'd never sleep with a player hitting under .250. Not unless he had a lot of RBIs and was a great glove man up the middle. Y'see, there's a certain amount of life wisdom I give these boys. I can expand their minds. Sometimes when I get a ballplayer alone, I'll just read Emily Dickenson or Walt Whitman to him. And the guys are so sweet, they always stay and listen. Of course, a guy'll listen to anything if he thinks it's foreplay. I make them feel confident, and they make me feel safe -- and pretty. 'Course what I give them lasts a lifetime. What they give me lasts a 142 games. Sometimes it seems like a bad trade. But bad trades are part of baseball. Who can forget Frank Robinson for Milt Pappas, for god's sake! It's a long season, and you gotta trust it. I've tried them all, I really have. And, the only church that feeds the soul, day in, day out, is the church of baseball.

8. with the way commercials pervade baseball they should sing some
commercials jingles.
Thanks to the remote, i seldom watch commercials anymore so I don't have a recent example,
From the olden days, they could have everyone whistle the 'Old Spice' song, or especially some beer jingles.

And WTF is it with "God Bless America." A rejected showtune is now American Anthem II?

11. They usually do both.
At least at all the major and minor league games I've been to the past ten years they've done both.

12. At Dodger Stadium they do both, but GBA comes 1st and
is the one that is televised. It's usually sung somewhat off key, and everyone is expected to stand and pay it reverent attention. It's total bullshit and has nothing to do with the ballpark experience.

Personally I think the Star Spangled Banner before the game is "patriotism" enough. Are Americans so insecure in their "love of country" that they must pay it homage multiple times at sporting events? Ridiculous.

I'll let the Flyers have the Kate Smith recording, but otherwise, we could shitcan this song tomorrow and I wouldn't miss it a bit.

14. Take Me Out to the Ballgame used to be the 7th inning stretch song
Edited on Wed Jul-13-11 11:28 AM by GoneOffShore
Well, the last time I went to a ballgame.

But I haven't been in ages.

If I go to a game anytime soon, I'll probably stand up, turn my back and head for the beer stand.

And what's the deal with the Star Spangled Banner at the beginning?

It's a baseball game - not a homeland pep rally.

18. Last Brewer game I went to...
It was Take Me Out to the Ballgame and Roll Out The Barrel.

And the Sausage Races!

I really want to go to one this year considering how well the first half of the season is going, but I can't find the time to drive all the way down to Milwaukee! Maybe a DU Brewer Game outing is in order for us Wisconsinites (and those Chicago DUers who wish to see a DECENT baseball team play.)

20. Tell 'em it's a prayer
Well, that's what the original lyrics claim.

"While the storm clouds gather far across the sea,
Let us swear allegiance to a land that's free,
Let us all be grateful for a land so fair,
As we raise our voices in a solemn prayer.

God Bless America......"
