"Carmageddon" in LA? Gimme a fucking break, here.
Edited on Fri Jul-15-11 02:16 PM by Redstone
So ONE stretch of ONE highway is going to be closed, and it's only OVER THE WEEKEND.

Some end of the world THAT is, as it's being portrayed by an awful lot of people.

If you work at a hospital or similiar, where you have to go to work over the weekend, you do indeed have my condolences for the pain in the ass it will cause for your commute.

But for everone else? It's the weekend, dammit, so you don't HAVE to go anywhere that would require you to use that road or the alternated clogged-up routes.

Just find somewhere else to go. or stay home. How hard is that?

PS: There are only two ways out of my town: I-95 and US Route 1. If 95 has a problem, Rte 1 becomes gridlocked (and we can't even get out of our street, which is a dead-end with Route 1 as the ONLY outlet). When that happens we either stay home or walk into town, so I know what I'm talking about here.

10. Why "lighten up?" I'm not the one who is blowing the situation
WAY, way out of proportion. I'm just commenting on the people who are actually doing so.

28. I agree -- it was just a funny way to put it so that
people would pay attention.

2. Don't forget about the Merritt Parkway, also.
We lived in Norwalk and Bridgeport for several years. We moved to Maryland, and I am still only a couple of miles from I-95 and Route 1.

3. My dear Redstone!
Yeah, it's happening just north of me here...

I rarely use that part of the 405, and obviously I won't be this weekend!

No hardships here.

Nice to see you today!

:hi:

4. You being a nurse, it may not surprise you, but
goldang, broken ribs hurt a LOT more than a broken back does.

But at least I'm down to only about half the day in my Jewett brace, and part of that is the mile I'm walking every day (and without a cane!) (neither of which is doctor-sanctioned, nor is the home-grown physical therapy I'm doing on my broken shoulder).

I figure, screw it. I don't have cancer or heart disease (and have a textbook BP of 110/75 as of this afternoon), so I'll just MAKE the broken parts of my body do what I tell them to do, rather than what they want to do - no matter how much those parts complain.

I'm the boss here, after all. Those body parts may think they're punishing me by ratcheting up the pain when I work them over, but let 'em try that as much as they want to. They won't win, if for no other reason than the fact that I'm a lot bigger than they are.

5. Good for you!
I might be a little bit cautious about pushing too much...

Pain is telling you something, after all...

You might want to tell your doc about your shenanigans! Just so he knows...

I'm really glad to hear that you're doing this well.

7. I told my doctor this afternoon. She sighed, and said
"You know I'm going to tell you not to do that, don't you? And I know you're not going to listen to me, right?"

Does she know me, or what? The fact is, that as a small business, I am able to buy into the State's health-insurance system, which doesn't cost a fortune. But not everyone (and no physical-therapy places in my town) accepts that insurance.

So, like the typical cussed New Englander that I am, I'll just do it my damn self. You'd be surprised at the range of motion I've recovered in the shoulder, even after rebreaking it into five pieces and never having the surgery to get it repaired.

It looks kinda knobby still, but it's not like I parade around without a shirt on, so all I care about is how it works, not how it looks.

And my typing has gotten almost back to its previous speed, so it must be working, yes?

6. Yeah, it's just media overhype.
Sure, the 405 is the busiest freeway in the country, but it's a short stretch, and we've known about it here for months now. No biggee.

8. Media hype indeed, as are SO many things, yes? Some days, you wonder if
there's ANY dang thing happening in the world that's of any real importance, don't you?

9. Apparently it's only important if it's a small murder trial or a freeway closure.

15. unless you understand the volume of cars on that road you will not be able to grasp it
More taffic goes through this pass in an hour than your typical out of state hiways see in a month. It's the cumulative effect that will create this "carmageddon" idea. With this main artery closed, freeways will back up all over the LA area. It's not just this one part. The Canyons will all be bumper to bumper. Probably Pacific Coast Hwy will be at a standstill. There's no easy route that covers this area. The net effect will could be Friday afternoon bumper to bumper gridlock even on the surrounding city streets.

Or, it could be like the Olympics in '84 when everyone stayed off the roads and traffic was a whiz.

Trouble is 27 years ago there were a million less people here. I'll report back from my remote (thank God) outpost in Ventura County, located on the other side of Kanan Canyon about 15 miles from ultra north Malibu. If there is a fire, we're screwn.

18. Actually, although I don't think it was done for that reason, the hype has been a public service.
All the advance warning has sunk in, and I think that the commutes will probably be smoother than normal this weekend because most people will stay off the road. The same thing happened during the 1984 Olympics, and after the 1990s riots.

25. When the summer Olympics were in LA,

We went, with great trepidation. Freeway traffic was very light and we sailed through in all directions.

Gotta believe the locals pay attention to the media!

27. Hahaha, it's been the best traffic in L.A. all weekend
Just enough people stayed home so traffic was a breeze. I stayed off any 405 type routes but a friend met me for drinks & to see a band we like, I thought she was nuts for coming but she made it from the OC in 45 minutes -- 20 minutes faster than usual.

We'll see if things get weird today after everyone hears this. But mostly it was like the 84 Olympics.
