True Blood last night review & recap **** spoilers ****
Wow – all I can say is things took a turn for the better with last night’s episode of “True Blood”. I mean, for those of you who have read my weekly posts, I am no stranger to being very vocal with what was really wrong with this season – and that’s the Were-panthers/Jason storyline. Well, this week’s the storyline started pretty bad – with every girl taking a turn at raping Jason. BTW I found it ironic at some of the sites people were angry that the term ‘rape’ was used to describe what Crystal and the inbred women of Hotshot were doing. But let’s face it – if that was Sookie or Tara or any other female strapped to the bed and every inbred male was taking turns forcing sex – it would be a clear-cut case of rape. Just because it’s a man being held against his will doesn’t make it any less than rape. Jason has said ‘NO’ multiple times, it is what it is.

So anyhow, finally Jason was able to convince one of the inbreeds to set him free. Honestly, I would have shut off the TV if True Blood had a 12 year old girl force Jason to have sex with her. But instead that young girl was the only one who had enough common sense to realize that her first time should not be while forcing a man who was tied to the bed and forced to take viagara to have sex with her. Jason was really good as he told the young girl about how her first time should be special. Finally, Jason was set free as that young girl realized she had to let Jason go.

Luckily, Jason has enough outdoor survival instincts that he knew panthers could trace his scent and that he would have to find a way to protect himself since he didn’t have the strength to outrun them. Thanks to Jason’s outdoor skills we were able to eliminate one of True Blood’s creepiest, unlikeable characters – Felton Norris. Of course the guy was barely dead when the newest creepiest unlikeable character took his place – and that was Crystal Norris. Seriously, do we need to see her topless every week and can someone feed that girl?

But maybe Alan Ball has heard the cries of the True Blood fans and finally found a way to possibly redeem this whole storyline. After Jason collapsed along the side of the road who would be the first car to stop and take care of him? None other than Hoyt and Jessica. And Jessica did what all kindhearted vampires do – she offered Jason to drink her blood. And that simple act will probably open up the biggest can of worms not only tying Jason back into the Vampire activities but could even work with Andy too. Come on, we all know what happens when you drink large quantities of Vampire blood – you start to have sex dreams about the vampire you drink it from. Sookie has them with both Bill and Eric, Same had one with Bill, Lafayette has them with Eric but his are a bit whacked. But now Jason is going to have a sexual connection with a young, hot vampire who happens to be his best friend’s girlfriend. I don’t think Hoyt stands a chance against a charmer like Jason, a guy who not only will probably be a ‘freak’ too since he now has were-panther in him BUT I suspect he’s got some of that Vamp Crack blood in him because of his faery background (remember Queen Sophie fed off of Jason & Sookie’s cousin Hadley and she didn’t have the telepathic gift). AND, if Jason goes back to work you now have TWO V-addicts working together. Jason has had a taste of V-Blood again and putting a recovering addict and an addict in overdrive can only mean some good stories.

OK back to other insights into last night’s episode.

Eric, Sookie & all the other Vampires:
Wow, I loved seeing drunk Eric – that guy was fun. I guess downing an entire fairy not only gave him enough time to enjoy the sunlight but makes you drunk too. We got to see a playful, flirty Eric that in a way even endeared Sookie more to him. It was great to see a naked Eric frolicking in the local creek (although drinking and spitting out the local creek water – ugh!). And I loved it when Alcide reverted back to human and watching him and Eric get all uppity with each other. Damn I wanted to be Sookie and have the honor of two very hot, naked men getting all possessive over me! Shame the faery blood wore off and Eric had to go home. And when Eric came down from his faery-high you really felt for him with his saddened state. It’s only a matter of time until those 2 are all over each other.

I loved how Sookie defended Eric to Bill. Knowing it wouldn’t take much for Bill to open the doors to the cubby hole, Sookie did everything in her power to keep Eric out of the house (since Eric owns it – every vampire is welcome to enter the place). You could tell she still is head-over-heels in love with Bill but she recalled all the hurt & lies and used that to keep Bill from entering the home (and thus protecting Eric’s location).

And you had to love that scene with Bill and Portia’s relatives. Wonderful casting with Katherine Helmond as the grandmother. As soon as the grandmother started talking genealogy I knew where this was leading to – that Bill is the great-great-great-great grandfather to Portia and Andy. Now normally I would creep out over inbreeding (read anything I’ve ever written about the were-panthers and Hot-Shot) but let’s face it- there is about 5 generations that separate Bill & Portia and it’s not like Bill can get Portia pregnant. But Bill isn’t a Hotshot inbreed – he knows when to walk away!

And although Marnie is suppose to be the big baddie this year, my money is on Nan Flanigan. Jessica Tuck plays Nan like the Alpha-bee-yoth that she is. Nan is not a woman to be crossed with or fucked over. And I loved her parting line when she reminded Bill that there aren’t many retired vampire kings out there. Thank you Alan Ball for expanding Nan’s role this year!

THE WITCHES:
I know what they are trying to do with this Witch storyline but last night it was like watching the Keystone Kops, if the Kops were actually a bunch of Louisiana Witches. That flashback scene was a bit weird although needed to help explain just what Marnie was channeling. But watching Kevin, Jesus and Marnie trying to find that spell to undo what happened to Eric along with Tara’s normally snide remarks was getting a bit tedious. I know in the end there will be a good storyline payout but it just seems to be dragging a bit.

Sam, Luna, Maxine and the Mickens:
I’m kinda indifferent about this storyline so far. Mind you, anytime you can find a reason to put Maxine Fortenberry into the mix you have great TV time. I loved it when Sam pointed out the hypocrisy when Maxine yelled at Sam for deserting his own brother. Sam then reminded her that she abandoned her only son (because Hoyt is dating a vampire). There is never too much Maxine on True Blood! I think there is a good setup to the Luna & Sam love. Of course Sam can’t find himself an uncomplicated woman but instead he’s now dating a skin-shifter (one who can go human) who had a child to a werewolf with a jealously streak. I’m guessing we’ll meet that werewolf next week AND there will be some tie-in to Alcide and Debbie.

I was excited to see they brought back Melinda Mickens (Sam & Tommy’s mother) but I guess she’s incapable of living her life without Joe Lee Mickens. I did think it was well done yesterday when the writers gave us time to watch just Melinda with Tommy. Tommy seemed like the happiest kid in the world because it was just him and his mamma. Tommy had a day to bask in the glow of being with his Mamma without any Joe Lee around. Of course that wasn’t going to last for long when it turns out Melinda couldn’t let go of Joe Lee. This could be a good storyline and I’d love to see the Lioness Maxine (that’s what she called herself) go up against the Mickens.

Officially the worst storyline – Arlene, Terry and creepy baby.
Move over were-panthers, after a breath of fresh air was breathed into your storyline, the creepy Mikey baby storyline is officially it. Again, it’s probably because there seems to be little connection to other people in Bon Temps. I know that could change down the line but at this point, the less I see of them the better. I kinda liked Arlene and Terry better when they were just extras in Bon Temps we would see whenever we were at Merlottes.

Next week there may be a delay in getting your weekly DU True Blood recap. I may be in NYC and I doubt my hotel room will have HBO. So I'm hoping I can catch the repeat on HBO-Go on either my laptop or Iphone. I am hoping I can see it that night but it may be Monday night when I finally see it. I'm worried that'll be the big Eric & Sookie week!

1. nice recap...
Yeah the hotshot story line needs to go!

I still love the the show, but I'm getting tired of the main characters. Sookie reminds me of the whiney girl Bella from Twilight and I wouldn't mind seeing her go away. Bill, eh...

I would love to see a spin off with Eric and Pam.

2. As usual, you absolutely nailed it
I honestly look forward to your take on the show each week.

I have been so disappointed in this season that I almost didn't watch last night, but I am glad I did. I was very happy about the change in Jason's SL - and that he hooked up with Hoyt and Jessica. "Just because it’s a man being held against his will doesn’t make it any less than rape. Jason has said ‘NO’ multiple times, it is what it is." Absolutely

Still don't have much interest in Tommy, although it is better now that he has hooked up with mommy & daddy again - looking forward to a Maxine & Joe Lee confrontation. I liked seeing Sam's interaction with a child as well as the child's mom - nice dimensions emerging in Trammel's character.

" I kinda liked Arlene and Terry better when they were just extras in Bon Temps we would see whenever we were at Merlottes." Exactly. The evil baby thang is just terrible and boring and so obvious.

The witches are working my last nerve.. I think it might be the ever-pissed off Tara that triggers my disdain. And where o' where is the smart mouthed Lafayette? I miss him. I am not overly fond of the cringing, whining Lafayette, even though I understand where his fear comes from. I liked the witch-scenario better as it was in the book, when all supes got together to destroy the witches, because they were all threatened. This just seems all convoluted to me and not as strong.

Looking forward to the ever expanding Eric-Sookie relationship. Eric is the best thing about this show so far this season. Skarsgard's portrayal is multi-layered and actually endearing. Enticing, too.

Thanks for writing each week.

3. I always enjoy reading your feedback of my feedback
you always bring some extra to what I might have overlooked!

I think we are probably going to see less and less of the Hotshots crowd and more of Jason back with his own people in Bon Temps. How many weeks until Jason and Jessica hook up is what I'd like to know! Then Hoyt is going to go crawling back to Momma Maxine and Maxine is going to take out that shotgun she bought the end of season #3 and go after the people who broke her baby boy's heart. I'm really hoping that the infertility that is rampent in HotShots isn't low sperm count but deformed ovaries popping blanks. I have no clue how many of those women had babies with Jason but that would really kill the storyline. Don't get me wrong - I'd love to see Jason with one baby, but not a dozen. Ewwww....Creepy!

I have to admit that I'm disappointed that True Blood was once again overlooked at the Emmy's this year. Sure this isn't top quality TV acting but the show is damn good. I keep wondering if it's because the show premieres right around Emmy nomination time. The previous season is long since gone and not enough new stuff for the new season to consider. Because honestly there is some excellent casting in that show. Skarsgard seriously deserves a nomination. I thought Denis O'Hare (Russell Edgington) might get one along with James Frain (Franklin Mott) but both were overlooked. Maybe next year.

4. Ha ha I am SO with you re: Hotshot..
geez - a dozen baby Jason/panthers.. that really gives me the squeems. What about Hoyt and Tommy fighting over mama? Might be interesting - I would hate to see Jessica done in by mama's shotgun- I am surprised she hasn't tried to get Tommy and Summer together.

I thought True Blood actually won a few Emmys..they didn't I guess (dohhhh) I am very surprised. I guess I don't follow the award shows like most people do. I agree with your nominations completely, though. I heard they are bringing Russell back for the fifth season, so that will be awesome, if the show is still around.. the demon baby combined with the hotshot 'dozen' may kill the show before its time.

No question, Skarsgard is doing really excellent work. He is the main reason I keep tuning in and now that some of the very questionable SLs are changing, I have higher hopes for this season.

Looking forward to next week

6. OMG - DON'T click here if you don't want good Jason Spoiler!!!

Cheesybones: What's coming up for Jason on True Blood now that he's turning into a were-panther?
Unfortunately for Jason (Ryan Kwanten), things are going to get worse before they get better. But let's not get too hasty on the turning into a were-panther thing. Those hotshot cats aren't the sharpest knives in the drawer, so what are the chances they can pull off creating a were-panther from scratch? Besides, Jason will have other things occupying his mind. Remember all those sexy Eric-Sookie dreams? We can say that Jason is going to be having some graphic vamp blood dreams of his own, thanks to Jessica's (Deborah Ann Woll) healing powers.

7. Awards for True Blood
Edited on Tue Jul-19-11 08:05 AM by LynneSin
For the big awards for the Emmys - True Blood normally gets non-acting nominations. They won 1 emmy in 2009 for outstanding casting.

They get alot of nomination for the Saturn Awards (Science Fiction) and the GLAAD awards (positive portrayal of GLBT in the media).

Oh and Anna Paquin has been nominated twice for a Golden Globe and won in 2009. She now has a Golden Globe AND an Oscar to her name (she won an Oscar at age 11 for best supporting actress with the movie "The Piano")

5. I especially agree with
your take on Tara. She is getting on my last nerve and seems reduced to snide comments.
