DC Comics imagines a Springsteen-influenced Superman

that's...interesting. But my gut reaction, as far as the look is concerned, is 'don't mess with the classics.'

Writer Grant Morrison has been talking about his vision for Superman, and he's drawing inspiration from The Boss.

That's right, Morrison's take on Superman will draw on Bruce Springsteen, in a way. Speaking in the London Metro, Morrison talked about the need to modernise the character and address some of the problems that have developed around Superman, such as the much-mocked costume.

"I want to make Superman a more contemporary character," says Morrison. "We'll be changing how he looks, dresses and behaves. He'll be more like the Superman who appeared in 1938 – more socially active and a champion of the oppressed."

So what will replace the iconic blue, red and yellow outfit? According to Morrison, "he's wearing jeans and a T-shirt – a Bruce Springsteen version of Superman, that's the angle we're taking. The cape's still indestructible but the rest is picked up in a shop."

Superman will be a bachelor again when DC Comics relaunches its entire superhero line in September. He had been married to longtime love Lois Lane since 1996 in comics.

"We just felt there were more interesting, creative stories to mine in that time period of Superman's history prior to him getting married," says Jim Lee, one of DC's co-publishers along with Dan DiDio.

"There was something special and unique about the love triangle that existed between Clark Kent, Superman and Lois Lane," Lee says. "By restoring that essential part of his mythology, we would get a lot more interest in the character and take Superman and Clark Kent in bold new directions that felt more contemporary and modern."

But that costume design is going to sink the entire enterprise.
