Just Installed Lion
on my desktop, and the install routine is now running on my laptop.

Takes quite a while to download ~45 minutes - as it is only about 3.75 gigs, I'd guess the Apple App Store servers are getting slammed. If you have more than one computer, look for the installable and copy it somewhere before you let it start installing (the install routine will delete the installable, so if you wait it will be too late) and you'll save the download time updating your other computers.

Install takes another 40 minutes or so (or at least that is what it took on my tower unit). A little longer for your email to update (big changes there). I also needed to download an update to iTunes.

The only weirdness is that scrolling now works the opposite way, both with the trackpad and the magic mouse, although supposedly you can go into preferences and change it back if you wish. I think it is a lot easier to get used to than I would have thought it would be.

Oh, Safari now has spell check (sort of like a word processor - works in real time).

Well, off to explore.

2. Not entirely true.
New application included called face time that basically is a videophone.

But thanks for the thought.

4. Used to be a Windows guy until
six or seven years ago. So Mac OS is a big improvement (have a cheap Win7 laptop lying around somewhere, so I'm familiar with it) to me. And you can do UNIX command line stuff in Mac if you really want to. Not familiar with Linux, other than conceptually. Supposedly pretty near bullet-proof. I basically traded interface for that last bit of solidity. And for insurance, I have massive redundancy. Three bootable drives, backups on site and off, etc, etc.

9. With three drives you should stripe them and make them faster
You could make them RAID 5 and then be able to lose a disk...although that slows them down

11. I have an external RAID5
eSATA setup that I use as a scratch disk to speed up processing large Photoshop files - large panos and such.

The tower has an SSD that I stuck into a spare DVD slot that I use as a boot drive, and four 2 TB hard drives, that I use for other stuff.

6. Web video chat. What a novel idea!
Wow...what started out as a sarcastic reply, I'm now turning into a PSA:

DONT search for photos of old webcams.

8. It's had web video chat for years.
Edited on Wed Jul-20-11 04:25 PM by Moondog
This appears to be a serious improvement. Not something I use, so I don't really care. But the icon for it showed up on my dock, so I played with it a bit, and it appears to be much better imagery.

On edit: I actually have an old webcam for one of my ancient Windows boxes (long gone) lying around here somewhere. You're right, they're pretty hideous.

10. I've wondered why video chat/telephones never really took off.
It's hard to roll your eyes at your friends or go to the bathroom stealthily.

17. Welcome to FaceTime! You'll love it.
We use it all the time to see/talk to our son in Lexington. It's fantastic.

"Son ... who was that girl that just walked by and why isn't she wearing anything?"

"Son ... what's that in the ashtray?"

A must-have app for all parents!

7. Yes. Absolutely.
To include an internal and an external that are bootable into Snow Leopard. I'll wait a few days, and then overwrite one of them with the new install, wait a few weeks, and then do the other one.

I do that every time. I've gone through this OS upgrade drill a number of times now, and have never needed the backups.

But the one time I didn't do it would be when I got the catastrophic failure. So I do it.

Kind of like going to the dentist, periodic physicals, and periodic maintenance on automobiles. I hate it. But I do it.

21. No, not now
This old mac was given to me by a dear friend who was finally upgrading last year. It was the top of the line Powermac in 2003 and it still runs like a Rolls Royce compared to all the windows machines I've had. That's one good thing I've discovered about mac vs. pc, about the best I've ever done with a pc was 3 years before I had to replace it. This old thing just keeps soldiering on, especially when I'm doing multitrack audio production, it kicks ass at that :)

But I don't need to upgrade my system for a while so for the time being I'm okay. I may wait for the Maru version, too. :)
