Pat Metheny - And I Love Her
Not normally a fan of covers but this one is awesome. Such interesting chord progressions on this classic Beatles song.

2. I really like his "Travels" CD.

Hard to explain what I like and don't like in his style, but there is more of what I like on this CD, especially "Are You Going With Me" from "Offramp" (a superior version is offered here) and "Phase Dance."

He's definitely a supremely talented musician...it's just that some of the bands / settings aren't the kind of stuff I normally like. "Travels" is one I like.

3. I have his One Quiet Night album from 2003
which is another solo acoustic effort. I agree about the bands which is probably why I'm more of a fan of his solo works.

The record was co-produced by Steven Rodby. It received public and critical acclaim, particularly for Metheny's nuanced performance, and won the 2004 Grammy Award for Best New Age Album.

4. He also did some excellent work (with the late, legendary Jaco Pastorious) on...
...on Joni Mitchell's concert album "Shadows And Light."

Then again, there's a prerequisite...you've got to be at least a casual fan of Joni or the playing won't matter.

That's how I'd describe myself...a casual fan...because even though I own many of her "key" albums (Blue, For The Roses, Court And Spark, Hissing Of Summer Lawns, Hejira, Shadows And Light), every time, without fail that she launches into that yodeling crap, she loses me.

Joni fans know what I'm talking about, but a lot of them won't admit it. Call it yodeling or warbling or whatever you want but she's singing the song and you're into it and all of a sudden it's that "Loo-lee-LOOOOO-lee-LOOOOO-lee-LOOOOOOOO" nonsense and I can't change CDs fast enough.

It's like that scene in "Star Trek II: Wrath Of Khan" where Ricardo Montalban puts that thing in Checkov's ear and it burrows into his brain and Checkov screams bloody murder, except I'm guessing that thing in his ear is a tad more enjoyable than Joni Mithcell doing that damned yodeling thing she does.

I'm not kidding! The next time you're around a hard-core Joni Mitchell fan, say something like "Well, I like some of her stuff, but you know, may-un...the yodeling really gets to me, and watch the expression on their face as they attempt, in vain, to deny it. Damned HIPPIES!

:-)

I've tried...unsuccessfully...to make a single Joni Mix CD out of the albums listed above, and every time I hit the yodeling and give up. And if it's a song where she curtails the yodeling, it ends up being a song that's really not my favorite. So among the songs I REALLY like, where the yodeling is at a MINIMUM, I haven't come up with enough for an 80-minute CD.

Having said all of that, the interplay between Metheny and Pastorious on this CD is amazing, and Joni...well, you know, she yodels a few times.

Caveat Emptor!

:-)

6. Good CD.
Some of his new stuff like Speaking of Now sounds like white noise to me, with no structure.

Pat Metheny I recommend: A MAP OF THE WORLD Soundtrack (with sigourney weaver in the movie).
