Norristown Company Saves Philly From Blackout
PJM Interconnections Regulates Electricity In Philadelphia Area

POSTED: 1:00 p.m. EDT August 15, 2003
UPDATED: 3:46 p.m. EDT August 15, 2003

NORRISTOWN, Pa. -- New York is just a few hours away from Philadelphia, so many local people are wondering why we dodged the blackout that paralyzed the Big Apple. A company in Norristown had a big part in protecting the Delaware Valley.

The Philadelphia area is on the same grid as the places that lost power Thursday afternoon, but different companies regulate smaller regions of the grid that delivers power to an area from the Atlantic Ocean to the Rocky Mountains, and from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

A company called PJM Interconnections in Norristown regulates the area in and around Philadelphia. Representatives of PJM said it was quick action by their staff that saved the area from the blackout.

"This is the largest power eruption ever in the history of the United States of America," said Phillip Harris of PJM Interconnections.

PJM Interconnections coordinates electricity for seven states and Washington, D.C. -- an area that includes the Delaware Valley.

These folks saw the blackout heading our way and disconnected the Midatlantic region from the powergrid and fired our the backup generators to ensure we had power. This includes PA, MD, VA, WV, DE, NJ and DC. It wasn't perfect though - they did lose part of NJ and NW PA. But these folks did a great job!!!!
