Which James Bond movie would you most recommend to people...
...who have never seen a Bond film before but may have heard heresay about the franchise?

I have my own personal favorites:
* On Her Majesty's Secret Service (despite George Lazenby)
* Live and Let Die
* The Spy Who Loved Me
* For Your Eyes Only
* Octopussy
* A View to a Kill (I know...)
* The Living Daylights
* Licence to Kill

I have to admit that the Bond movie I'd most recommend would have to be "The Spy Who Loved Me", with "For Your Eyes Only" being a very close second. Sure, the music has disco moments and it's Roger Moore's semi-campy portrayal, yet he is considerably toned down in both these movies and the plotlines for both simply can't be matched either.

I also found it interesting that the people who made the blockbuster turkey "Moonraker" didn't repeat the formula and instead made "For Your Eyes Only" more realistic... Thank goodness!

So am I alone in my nutty opinions? And they are nutty because Timothy Dalton played Bond with much more conviction than Moore.

"I don't expect you to talk, Mr Bond...I expect you to DIE!"

It had the best name for the female lead; Pussy Galore

8. Is that Brian Blessed in your sig pic? Anyway,
I actually DO like Goldfinger, though it should be too pedestrian and campy for my tastes. It feels like an 50s American flick, hardly what I'd expect to be made by the British. Though "Pussy Galore" is definitely ad devlishly British that no American production would ever be able to hope to get away with (damn money grubbing prudish yanks...) But I do agree, the "I expect you to die!" scene is one of the best EVER in the history of film or TV. Very spot-on and way-cool. It's the "50s American" aspect that makes me shy away from it. And Connery's too wooden as well...

I do prefer "AVTAK" because it takes the concept seriously, though it has dated itself considerably and they were nice eough to bring up the concept of a microchip resistant to EMP but then did NOTHING with it... :eyes: I loved May Day though, she's THE best henchman/henchwoman ever! And Grace Jones carried off what could easily have been the corniest, hammiest "bad guy turn good guy" scene ever. But I'm weird... :evilgrin:

2. Nothing nutty about it...
Roger Moore's Bond films are plenty entertaining.

But I have to admit I'm in the Connery camp, so I'm going to be boring and obvious, and suggest Goldfinger and Dr. No.

9. Don't be sorry!
Of the Brosnan flicks, I respect "Goldeneye" the most as it TRIES to be Bond. That and the movie trailer (the one with action in it, not Brossie trying to look like Dalton and stepping into the forefront asking if we were expecting somebody else :eyes: ) gave me high expectations, that trailer was PERFECT.

I haven't seen "Die Another Day" apart from some truly AWFUL clips used in the TV advert. "My friends call me James Bond" was more than enough for me not to give those dumbells another penny to see Brosnobond do another pale pansy imitation of Roger Moore again. Though I do like the concept of Bond being kidnapped and brainwashed or whatever, though him becoming a rogue was carried out MUCH more effectively and with more brains and charm in "Licence to Kill".

Hmmm, if you're a Doctor Who fan, would you show potential viewers any story with William Hartnell in it? :D

5. On Her Majesty's Secret Service.
It's the most important Bond film, and events in it are mentioned in many other Bond films.

11. APPLAUSE!!!
With the exception of a certain Brosnan movie which made the reference (and in a pathetic way as well, go figure), EVERY Bond movie that makes a mention of any event in "On Her Majesty's" also happens to be a GREAT Bond movie:

"Spy Who Loved Me"
"For Your Eyes Only"
"Licence to Kill"

I agree with your logic, it is definitely a pivotal Bond flick.

I heard that if Lazenby had stayed on, the follow-up movie would have featured a revenge-style plot of Bond going after Blofeld. (the crap that was in "Diamonds Are Forever" was happily forgotten when the reasonably entertaining pre-credits teaser in "For Your Eyes Only" was made. Though Bond should have been a bit more angry at Blofeld instead of making campy comments when trapping his wheelchair on the helicopter...) A pity he didn't stay on, if he had more training as an actor he would have made a great Bond.
