The Movie

It's a sad fact, but in the early '80s, the world of horror films was ruled by "slasher" flicks. Due to this, many supernatural horror films that were released during this time fell by the wayside. (The Changeling is a good example of a great ghost story that went unappreciated; The Evil Dead would be an exception to this rule.) However, thanks to the seemingly all-encompassing reach of DVD, many of these obscure films are finding a new audience. Dead & Buried, which has found a new home on DVD thanks to Blue Underground, certainly fits this profile.

Welcome to Potter's Bluff, a small seaside town where everything seems to be perfect. This is kind of place where the streets are quiet and everyone knows their neighbor. However, any stranger that dares venture into Potter's Bluff is brutally murdered by a group of people who document the crimes on film and with photos. Sheriff Dan Gillis (James Farnetino) is attempting to solve these crimes, but has no real clues. The local mortician, William Dobbs (Jack Albertson) is doesn't offer much help to the investigation, as he only wants to work on the corpses. To make matters worse, the townspeople, including Dan's wife, Janet (Melody Anderson), don't treat the murders with the same seriousness as Dan. As Dan comes closer to the truth, he learns that even the most beautiful places can hide the darkest secrets.

To say anything else about Dead & Buried would give too much away. The story builds to an amazing climax which offers one of the best shock endings in film history. Director Gary Sherman (Poltergeist III, Vice Squad) has created a very unique and interesting film which doesn't resemble a horror film in many respects. He and director of photography Steve Poster have done a great job in photographing the picturesque town, and creating an atmosphere of tranquility, which is shattered by the graphic murders (featuring special FX make-up by a young Stan Winston). As the story progresses, and Dan gets caught up in the mystery, the film grows darker, right up to that great ending.

No blood, no gore, very little special effects, but chilling nonetheless.

I liked that one too.

It's what the audience DIDN'T SEE and what they had to IMAGINE FOR THEMSELVES that made it so terrifying.

awesome British black horror/sci-fi-esque comedy... very witty!

British film with Dillon McDermot in post apocalyptic london on leave from his soliering duties buys some parts of a robot at a junk store.

The robot turns out to be the Mark 16 (I think), a self reparing attack unit that does not distinguish between enemy and ally. He gives this junk to his artist girlfriend who welds it into a massive scuplture. A sculpute with enough appliance components that the robot is able to reassemble itself and chase her around for an hour.

Love it. Loved every minute of it.

...sort of a sci-fi meets crime drama movie.

Lots of great Concrete Blonde music in the soundtrack, Kyle Mclaughlin, and the 'party old-guy' who looks a lot like Dan Rostenkowski.

I also think "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" is a brilliant movie, but I never, ever want to see it again.

"Pitch Black" is brilliant.

The latest installment of the "Hellraiser" series is brilliant. Really, if you get into the backstory of "Hellraiser," the origins of the puzzle boxes and such, those are all brilliant.

"Event Horizon" is brilliant.

The old "Scary Movie" - not the recent parody piece of crap, but the one starring Jonathan Hawkes, lately of "Identity" - is brilliant. Psycho killer in a carnival haunted house. Very cool.

Black and White English film from the early 1960s about a ventriloquist/hypnotist and his dummy, into which a former assistant's soul has been placed. One of the many Twilight Zone-esque movies/shows/whatever about how ventriloquism (?) is a career choice that leads you down the dark path with the puppet coming out on top.

Of course, I only watch it when Mike and the 'bots from MST3K are making fun of it.

That's one of the greatest episodes ever. My favorite line is:

"Hm, I wonder if it's a bad idea to smoke with my nicotine patch on? ...NAAAAH!"

And, of course, Pitch's long-awaited return cameo, hawking Devil Dolls to Crow.

Vorelli in bed. "Did I just see someone come into my room and paw my puppet?"

The Great Vorelli slowly turning around when there's a knock at the door of his dressing room, and Mike saying, "I'll bet someone sent me a birthday clown."

Vorelli is giving the girl Italian wine whose name translates into 'blood of the virgin.'
Vorelli: Oh, but you haven't drunk your wine.
Crow: DRINK THE BLOOD OF THE VIRGIN! I'm sorry... Was that too much?

God, I miss that show. Thank god for tapes and dvds.

all things considered, "Darkness Falls" was not that bad, nor was the first "Final Destination."

I'll get flamed for this, but I think "The Blair Witch Project" was one of the greatest horror films of all time. For those bereft of imagination or ready empathy, I am sorry.

Blair Witch was a great film...as long as you saw it before the hype or ignored it.

The second one was god awful, unfortunately.

that was an absolute shame, the second film. Dear God... and I SO wanted to see what might have happened next. It could have been SO good.

Skinny Puppy once made a short film accompanyment to their brilliant early composition, "Stairs and Flowers." Following that same metaphor, the genius creators of the first film ultimately, and sadly, reached for the money/shit rather than the rose.

Friends of mine wrote, directed and produced Blair Witch. Great bunch of guys.

And so you feel better about it, NO they had nothing to do with part 2. their names were listed as Exec Producers, but only because of the connection to the original.

But how, in the name of all that's Holy, did they ever get creative control of their franchise taken away from them? Did they sell the rights?

The original contract that they signed when Artisan bought the film. It stated that it they wanted to, Artisan could make a sequel, and after Part 2, Haxan Films again owned the full rights and could do what they wished.

And 10 seconds into Part 2, Artisan completely screwed Haxan by having a "news story" about the Blair Witch...the FILM. Haxan wanted it to be created as if it were always considered real, and not just a film.

I despise Hollywood.

If I were your friends, I would make a third and pretend as if the second one had never existed, like the Halloween franchise did after that stupid-assed "Halloween III: Season of the Witch" film.

I always thought a sequel named "The Blair Witch Hunt," following a bunch of gun-toting Christians and yahoos trying to debunk the legend, would've been good. So, of course, they named gen-x'er dumbass's "business" "The Blair Witch Hunt" in the second one.

Was it a deliberate attempt by Artisan and its parent companies to kill the franchise, in retaliation for your friends having made a brilliant movie for no money? I notice that Hollywood doesn't like being embarassed by upstarts; just look what they've done to Quentin Tarantino.

I thought Blair Witch was totally lame.

But I'll admit that I didn't see it until after it was pretty well known.

The idea of going to a World inside a computer fascinates me.

I'm not at all a huge sci-fi or horror fan, but that movie had me questioning everything I saw or did or thought for like, 2 weeks after I saw it. Damn, now I'm thinking about it again...x(

young mad scientist has a terrible wreck with his girlfriend, takes her head back to the lab that he shares with older mad scientist and monster in the closet, goes out and finds a buxom stripper (why not?) to attach head to...all hell breaks loose

It was set during colonial times in America. It involved a lot of weird psychedelic ghost shots. Really original...I wish I knew it's name.


There's another film that involved music, djinn and the end of the world that I really wish I could recall it's name too.

is a great horror/thriller movie that takes place in an abandoned mental institution.

You can catch it on cable every now and then.

YES! The goddamn WISHMASTER! A GREAT TRILOGY! Totally unnoticed straight-to-video release, but extremely cool! BALLSY American Hollywood horror flick!

If we can move this beyond Horror/Sci-Fi, most people have never seen nor heard of the movie "Freeway," starring Keifer Sutherland and a baby girl REESE WITHERSPOON, who is the most talented actress of her whole generation. It is AMAZING - "Little Red Riding Hood," if the Wolf were a serial killer, and Little Red herself, a teenaged white trash prostitute!

Also, "American Psycho" is a shockingly cute serial killer film, if nobody's ever seen it.

AND - If you think Nicolas Cage deserved the Oscar for "Leaving Las Vegas," you have seen NOTHING until you've seen him in "The Vampire's Kiss" - this is the performance of a LIFETIME!

...kinda corny, but enjoyable, Sci-fi movie from the 80's... with Harry Dean Stanton, Cindy Williams and Fred Ward.

OK, its probably pretty horrible from an "Academy" perspective, but I liked it - they tapped into another dimension, populated by non-humanoid creatures that could only be meshed into our reality, and vice versa, when this machine stimulated the human penial (sp?) gland.

And there was a scene where a conservative-type female was affected in such a way that she became an agressive dominatrix for a while.

I first saw this and the first Hellraiser the same night.

Evil Dead one and two, really liked the creativity in these in that all they had to work with was four people in a cabin in the woods.

All four Phantasms, love those flying silver brain-sucking spheres and the Undertaker from another dimension.

The Gate - a pretty cool early 80s (I think) movie about some kids playing a heavy metal record backwards and opening a gate from hell in the backyard.

I've heard about a while back, but haven't seen it yet. Might rent it this weekend, now that its fresh in my mind again. I could really stand to see that kinda cool horror/sci-fi flick right about now. (Cable-free for about two months, and Stargate repeats late Sundays and Voyager repeats at 3:00am leave me a little hungry).

It's more of a "thriller," but a decent movie anyway, especially the end. And I don't know many people who've seen it, although it's been on Encore lately.

It recently came out in DVD, by the way.

One of the best modern slasher films I've seen. It's about a "reality" TV show where people try to escape three psycho killers for cash and prizes all with the goofy cheer of a Japanese game show. The characters have a lot of humanity for a horror flick and the theme song is awesome. You can find Slashers on video/DVD.
For sci-fi I'd go with Dark City. The first 15 minutes may be a little confuseing, but it's worth it if you stick with it. There's some nice FX and an interesting idea.

I'd love to remake it with a 10 million budget.

"Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark" - Made-for-TV movie (but still scared the hell out of me) in which miniature monsters try to take back their house from newcomers. Hearing those whispers still freaks me out

"Burnt Offerings" - That limo will ALWAYS haunt me, especially the music that plays when the limo shows up. Also, the ending (no spoilers) may have been stolen from a more popluar horror flick, but it still f-ed with my head

"The Wicker Man" - More psychological than horror, but packs a punch. I've yet to see the extended version, but I'll grab the DVD when I find it. I was bummed to hear that Brit Eklund used a butt-double, though.

"Tourist Trap - 5 teenagers come across what used to be a thriving tourist trap, complete with lifelike mannequins. You can figure out what happens, right? But Chuck Connors plays a GREAT bad guy, and the use of telekinesis to make the mannequins move is REALLY frightening.

"Scream Pretty Peggy" - My wife said to put this one down, but she can't recall why.

It's kind of a sci-fi film noir detective story. An altogether great movie, but if you haven't seen it, and want to watch it, it is vitally important to skip the opening exposition.

Everyone who I know that for some reason or another missed the opening voice over loved the movie, while those who heard it thought it was still pretty good.

All you need to do is keep it on mute until the scene in the bathroom starts...

I've seen it three times. If I watch a movie a second time, it's a good one!

A Michael Mann film. Lots of psychological parallels in the characters. A bunch of misdirection. Great lines:

Very chilling. Almost no gore, but the suspense was incredible and it had the scariest ending you can imagine.

This was one of those TV movies of the week when I was a kid - back when TV let their producers/directors do some remarkably creative things (in retrospect).

A bunch of college kids having fun in the computer lab create a false identity and get a line of credit for it. From there, things go haywire. This was waaay ahead of its time and seriously spooky.

I don't think it's out on DVD, but there has been a VHS floating around.

every single Saturday morning because there was a four hour movie show called Commander USA's Groovy Movies. They were mostly old horror movies, so I have seen countless obscure horror movies. My favorites were always foreign vampire movies, heavy with atmosphere.
I miss that show, but really I have better things to do on a Saturday morning now.

The other night on the SciFi channel they ran Snow White starring Sigourney Weaver. It was surprisingly good. Very new take on the old Disney cartoon. No seven dwarfs, instead they were scary outcasts of society. Evil stepmother was a lot nastier than in the cartoon.

....a 70's Sci-fi movie.... Don Johnson was in it, I believe.
