Bush Visits Portland Aug 21- info here
On August 22nd, 2002, George W. Bush visited Portland, and we gave him quite a welcome.

Well, folks, he's coming back, almost a year to the day.

Let's be sure to give him a warm welcome back to "Little Beirut" once more.

Organizers have learned that the pResident will appear at a $2,000 a plate fundraiser on the campus of the University of Portland, most likely at the Chiles Center.

Please show up at 10 a.m. at Columbia Park on North Lombard...we can march from there.

It's bound to be a blast.

1. Yes!
Then the next day he'll get a proper
Seattle style reception:

I hope both cities have a great turnout
to protest Der Resident.
Good luck Stevie D.

2. a funny idea that i will not carry out
It would be fun to post very pro looking fliers all around town that say:

Meet George Bush!
August 21, 2003
UP Chiles Center
Doors open at 10:30!
All Are Welcome!
Sponsored by the Oregon Republican Party

Imagine the hilarity that would ensue: the pissed off citizenry turned away at the gate or at the door by secret service, guards, Oregon Republican officialdom.

Of course it would be wrong, in the very Nixonian/Segrettian sense of the word, so I won't do it.

3. Okay, but could we get someone ELSE to carry out
your brilliant idea?!!!

OH man!!!!!! That's a good one.

It would really beef up the number count of the protesters as reported by the media. Given past performance.....if we add 2000 repukes to the mix of 2000 protesters, the final number of "attended" would be reported as "a few hundreds".

Boy, I am really worried about this protest........ just based on the nature of the geography of the location. UP sits on a cliff...and is on a penninsula. Only two ways in and out of the neighborhood. ONE WAY is blocked off because the bridge is under repair.

Do a mapquest for 4000 N. Willamette, Portland and zoom our to see the lay of the land. (the aerial photo tells the story)

I don't know.........seems like awfully close quarters. And there is no doubt in my mind that Bush is coming right on that anniversary date as "REVENGE".

Sounds scary, but I will come.....

4. i would not be miffed in the least were i to see fliers like that
no pride of authorship. it's just another prankster variation. a little fluxus, a little project mayhem.

i see what you mean about the geography and geology. one hopes for the best but prepares for the worst (leave the babies at home).

meanwhile, i was thinking the number 40 bus would be best, but now that i reflect on the matter, willamette blvd is likely to be impassable. looks like THE NUMBER 1 BUS is the way to go, eh?

cheers. see you there!

6. DEFINITELY take the bus that runs down lombard.....
get off at Columbia Park and then walk due south.

40 is a BAD idea! LOL

the 4 totally SUCKS no matter where, when, why you are going somewhere!! LOL

If you are running through downtown...catch the 17 .... I think (?) the amended route due to the bridge being closed takes you express right up Interstate (or Greeley).....FAST.....up to Lombard and toward Columbia Park.

There's a 75 too.....but I don't know where that comes from!

www.trimet.org for bus schedules......

5. Good luck, Portlanders!
I was at last year's protest, although I can't be at this one, due to having relocated.

However, I wish all of you a heary Happy Protesting!

8. Giving this a
:kick:

To those attending, a big Thank you!

Please take lots of photos, if you can and stay safe!

Oh, and look out for a house, 2 blocks down from and leading to the main entrance of U of P. There will be a huge "No Bush in 2004" banner on the roof; hoping that the news helicopters will pick it up.

Damn, I want to be there.

9. Barbed wire?
From someone that has staked out the protest site:

There is a fence all along Willamette - the U of P is pretty well fenced in with a 7 foot fence with barbed wire on top. There are concrete barriers blocking off the streets that intersect with Willamette right there by UP. People are out in the neighborhood canvassing - reassuring the neighbors that we are planning a
peaceful protest with huge emphasis on being kind and respectful to the people, homes and property in the neighborhood.

10. They turned UofP into a freaking CONCENTRATION CAMP
A temporary one, to be sure, but it was some wierd freaky shit.

One (presumably) UP student at the protest was hollering, "I want to go to class, not get arrested! Let me go to school!"

A few people got arrested in Columbia park, but overall the police were more peaceful this time around from what I could see.
