Peace Goups, Unity Reached for National Demo, Oct. 25!
this was a long time coming..
:toast:
============================

Towards a United Demonstration on Oct. 25

The national steering committee of United for Peace and Justice has agreed to join ANSWER as co-sponsors of the Oct. 25 March on the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. to demand an End to the U.S. Occupation of Iraq. We are committed to involve all antiwar groups and people in this important event, and hope that you will join us in Washington or organize local actions on that day. UFPJ will provide more information and updates in the coming weeks

3. I know that United for Peace & Justice
and ANSWER have had some very big differences! So this is truely good news.

the UFPJ coalition includes many, many groups, including the National Council Of Churches and Code Pink (just for examples)

31. Closest Airport to Pentagon is DCA
Edited on Tue Sep-02-03 09:10 AM by markbark
AKA (idiot's name deleted) National Airport. (If you're flying in from the north, look out the right side of the aircraft for a nice aerial view of the Pentagon)

I would, however, recommend flying into Dulles. Airfares are generally cheaper than those that fly into National. YMMV :)

Tons of hotels in Crystal City section of Arlington (across the GW Parkway from DCA) all within about a 20 minute walk of the Pentagon.

20. If not protests in other cities,
they certainly will be organizing bus trips.

And if you want a protest in your city, why not organize one? For some cities and towns, you need to secure your permit months in advance. NOW is the time to check.

United for Peace and Justice offers an activist toolkit here:

And tips for organizing here:

GET BUSY, PEOPLE!!!

www.unitedforpeace.org/article.php?id=592

"Bush Lies - Who Dies?" Stickers
United for Peace and Justice has produced bold, attention-getting stickers that highlight the Bush Administration's lies about Iraq and the terrible human toll of those deceptions. These stickers are available in bulk for the cost of printing and postage - just $20 per 500.

22. spoke with someone
at UFPJ. Further info should be posted on the UFPJ website early next week. The event is being organised by UFPJ and ANSWER. The speakers and platform are in negotiation between the two groups (which folks who have had complaints about ANSWER's choices in the past will probably be glad to hear)

-I forgot to ask about SF..sorry, ..we'll find out soon.

again, stay tuned..

24. I hope they can hold this agreement together
and keep the speakers focused. I know there are a lot of causes out there and it is tempting to get them out there when you have an audience, but it only dilutes the primary message of the protest.

It's probably not too soon to begin lobbying CSPAN to cover it. I wonder if the Freepers will demand equal time for their counter demonstration. LOL!

Thanks for the info G_j and I hope you'll be able to stay on top of this and keep us informed.

25. Watered down and bad location
The Pentagon site is good if you have a car or know the bus systems.
Inviting a multi-cause demonstration will take away from the anti WAR message, Karl would support this.
The media will focus on the fringe issues and miss the point. Call me when there is a demonstration planned that will focus on ONLY the WARs .
And I want it at the Constitution center in Philly.

26. That's great!
So, you're organizing a demonstration at the Constitution Center in Philly that will only focus on the war.

Oh, wait, you said "call me when there is a demonstration planned." So, what does that mean? You want everyone else to do the heavy lifting and when it isn't to your liking, you reserve the right to criticize them!?!?

And, yes I'm being sarcastic and heavy handed, but the same thing happened last week in a thread about a protest in Chicago.

If you don't like protests and don't see their value, fine. Nobody is making you participate but why go around criticizing others who are trying to get involved in the process and make a difference.

If you don't like how they are being organized, get involving in shaping the focus and direction of them. Being an armchair critic from the comfort of your own home is the easy way out.

32. CALL C-SPAN! 765-464-3080
The rally is right there in Washington, DC, so they should have no problem getting a video crew out there. Great idea, prolesunited, this is worth a thread unto itself.

Edited on Sat Aug-30-03 02:16 AM by Terwilliger
I don't agree.

While I would stipulate that a modifcation of what the US troops are doing there is in order, to leave now would make a bad situation worse.

29.  an international force under the UN
Edited on Sat Aug-30-03 03:00 AM by G_j
is not US occupation. To end US occupation can mean putting in international troops under direction of the UN.
At least that's the way I read it.
And so far I have seen zero evidense that US occupation is doing anything, or can do anything to make life better at all for the Iraqis. Can anything positive possibly take place with Rummy in charge? I don't think so.

>"to leave now would make a bad situation worse."

really? The situation deteriorates by the day.

30. I wasn't talking about lack of UN involvement
But we definitely can't leave without the UN in place.

The problem there is, I believe the UN owes the US and Britain nothing. It was an illegal war from that start where the UN was almost entirely deprived of any ability to make decisions. Now the US and Britain can't handle it? Maybe there should be serious penalties for our countries, such as all future international engagements must be approved and ratified by the UN. Also, ALL cost of UN operations in Iraq should be paid for by the US and Britain. All control of Iraqi oil must be turned over to the civilian government of Iraq once that government has been established...&c.

When they say end US occupation, we get Afghanistan. We need to look at the bigger picture in that sense, and proceed towards the best outcome.

And NO US INTERFERENCE IN ESTABLISHMENT OF THE NEW GOVERNMENT...get Dick's grubby little hands off of the pump switches.
