BBV: League of Women Voters position

Yesterday I had a long and enlightening conversation with a member of the League of Women Voters. She is the Ohio elections specialists for the League and is a member of Blackwell's HAVA Committee.
Most of you are aware that the League has taken a position of opposition to a verified voter paper ballot or any paper trial. Mrs. Rosenfield said, "...I hope you understand that I cannot take a public position in favor of voter verified paper ballot trails because I am a League spokesperson on election laws and our national president has taken a public position in opposition". I assured her that we would not expect her to do that and would not quote her as being in opposition.
I asked her for her personal opinion and she stated that she is in favor of "optical scan" rather than "touch screen".
Optical scan is the lesser of two evils and does provide a ballot which can be used for auditing purposes.
She also implied to me that several of the state League organizations were working to get the National position changed. She felt that the president received some bad information and advice on this issue.
I think that we should help her out, by doing an e-mail or letter writing campaign. This is a very powerful group and to get them on our side would be a great coup.

I wrote asking them to change their official position, but...

Everytime I get an email from them asking me to support an issue or call a politican in support of an issue I reply with "I will not take up any of your issues until you re-consider your stand on voter verified paper ballots. Since this issue is central to the process of democracy, nothing else matters until this is changed."

Never got a reply, but I hope they realize they are losing support for their "pet" issues because of this stand on paper ballots.

I guess so she got "some bad info" on this. Imagine being against a paper trail..someway to verify and document the voting process.
