5. The NH one is a lot better
he actually blinks and doesn't have that deer in the headlights look he has when he speaks to the camera (and he smiles a bit). Man, I wish they would just cut some footage of him speaking to a crowd. That guy can really get 'em going on the stump.

7. Dean ads
My early verdict on his ads is this: While is ads are good "meat and potatoes" messages of substance, they are a little too wonkish and not engaging enough for the less politically interested American. Remember, * will have demagogic, jingoistic ads that play on emotion, nationalism and labels. Responding to such ads like a college professor will not be effective.

10. There's plenty of time for that.
It's so early! Primaries haven't even started and already we see this amazing phenomenon. 2004 may be as strange an election as 2000 was. Anyway, Dean is managing to

1) get in Bush's face, in Texas

2) get the DLC so scared that Holy Joe Lieberman is loudly denouncing him

3) raise as much money as Cheney's evil dinner did, in only a few days, with personal checks from ordinary Americans

4) simultaneously land on the covers of Time, Newsweek, and US News

...all before a single vote is cast. Amazing! Later, he can run the Spielberg/Norman Rockwell ads where he's pounding in nails or cooking soup or whatever.

11. Perspective
Keep in mind, though, guys, that as I understand it the ad isn't airing statewide, just in Austin, Texas. Austin is a liberal college town. I like that he's running ads in Texas, but it's not as gutsy as it seems at first glance, since it will only be running in a liberal market, not "behind enemy lines".

13. No TV Station in Crawford
Crawford is half way between Austin and Dallas, roughly speaking.

Austin was the right choice for a variety of reasons. It's the state capital, it does have a more educated constituency (and a youthful one), and it's relatively near Crawford. (If there's a cable system in Crawford it'll probably carry an Austin station or two.) It also has more reasonable TV rates than Dallas. The Waco market would have been another affordable choice, since that's very close to Crawford, but it wouldn't have generated quite as much press attention.

14. True but,
Williamson County, Bell County and most of Hill Country to the west are in the Austin market. * would outpoll Jesus Christ Himself in those counties.
